I'd heard such a mixer of reviews about this hotel which made me worried about  what I'd arrive to. But it's such a lovely, cosy hotel. It has a small gift shop with  souvenirs. The restaurant is large with a large a good selection of food even for fussy eaters. The staff were really helpful and there was a kids club in the evening which my daughter loved. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from restaurants, supermarket and shops and just behind the shops is the frozen lake. The only downside is the stairs in the family rooms, they are very steep and did worry me but as long as the kids are careful it's fine. We are returning to the same hotel again this year because we loved it so much and we can't wait.

Lovely hotel

Our second trip to Yllaskaltio and another wonderful stay! The accommodation is clean, simple, warm and very comfortable. The staff very friendly, and a tasteful redecoration of the restaurant undertaken since last year. 
I have noted with interest the ‘lack of choice’ of food for children. However this strikes me as very strange! If you want to give children a nutritionally poor and bland diet that is likely ultra processed, which leads to increased health risks (obesity, type 2 diabetes and all types cancer to mention but a few) then it may seem limited as no ultra processed pizza, burgers, Mac n cheese etc is present. However the choice of food is very varied, well presented in a buffet style, and hugely tasty. As kids can eat the same as adults - unsurprising to some - then the above criticism of ‘lack of choice’ simply does not add up. 
There is entertainment for kids and adults (pool, darts, arcade games) and a relaxing bar area to enjoy a drink with a lovely little gift shop attached. 
The location is probably one of the most beautiful places in earth, and many activities to do (skidooing, dog sledding and reindeer rides are a must, as is snow shooing). Fell skiing is great and, given the location, always guaranteed. Runs can be a little short & not as plentiful if you are used to the Alps per se, but there is still plenty to challenge people of all abilities, and the views more than make up for this. 
The Finnish people are lovely and welcoming. Cross country skiing fantastic as is hiking in the forests. 
I cannot wait to come back!

Wonderful hotel in a wonderful part of the world!

Family room; lots of selection at buffet breakfast and dinner. Gift shop, bar, lobby. Ski Bus comes right to door. The staff are very friendly and helpful.  Walking distance to supermarket. Sauna in each room. A Great place to stay if you're skiing at Yllas North or South.

Great Family Hotel a short bus ride to slopes

A very authentic alpine hotel with a friendly and helpful staff.  The rooms were basic in decor due to the snow sticking to boots, I presume, but very warm and cozy especially in contrast to the temperatures outside in December.  The dining room served a wide selection of dishes, buffet style, three times a day. All food was very fresh and there was a kettle on constant boil and T bags etc to make hot drinks.  I would recommend this hotel for family holidays 

Lovely time in Ylaas

Just returned from a four day break with TUI at the Snow Princess. Fabulous holiday, great hotel. Yes, rooms are basic but perfectly adequate, plenty of room, good shower, extra pillows on request. Food plentiful and varied and, as a coeliac, I was well catered for. Excellent staff and a special mention of the chef who cooked a special meal for my niece who has a number of allergies. Really went the extra mile for her. Great hotel for kids, lovely little play room, sledges for outside. Short walk to shops and frozen lake. Frequent busses to ski centres. Really couldn't fault it. Thank you.

Great hotel, fantastic staff.

Just spent the week at the hotel on (20-27 Feb 2022) on a group skiing holiday though Crystal Ski. There were 14 of us - 9 adults and 5 kids. The hotel is in a good location- short walk to the shops and bars. The ski bus picks up from the front of the hotel and Crystal Ski customers can get free daily bus tickets from the hotel reception. The bus trip to the ski resort is 4km and only takes 10 minutes. 
The hotel and rooms were clean and comfortable. We stayed in a quad room with 2 single beds downstairs and 2 beds up stairs in a mezzanine. There is a wardrobe with sliding mirror doors and a fridge. The bathroom is a wet room with shower, sink and toilet, and a sauna. The rooms were warm. A bit too warm at times but you can open the windows (near in mind it can be -20 outside!) 
The food was good. Food is taken in the restaurant. Breakfast had a wide choice including cereal, fruits, continental and egg, bacon and sausages. Evening meal is a buffet and there was plenty of food and choice. The kids (teenagers) enjoyed the food too. There is a bar in the restaurant and a bar in the foyer. The kids liked the games room.
The hotel staff were very polite and helpful. Always there to help with questions and service was good too. They helped us arrange a taxi bus to the Snow Village (which was by far cheaper option than booking an organised trip).
We even saw the Northern Lights outside the hotel!
We really enjoyed our trip to Lapland and I would definitely stay at this hotel again. Thanks for having us.

Great hotel- Loved Lapland and the skiing!

We booked this hotel and the holiday through Crystal ski, as a package deal, and it didn’t disappoint. The hotel itself is lovely, all the employees from the front desk to the housekeeping team and the buffet team were superb and friendly. Whenever we had a question about anything they were there to help. I’m not sure as to what the other reviews regarding this hotel were on about because this place is delightful, I was tempted not to book this hotel because of the reviews but I did so anyway, and it was so worth it. Me and my partner had a quad room, which was great as we had extra space and was cheaper than just a twin room. The room itself had a personal sauna in the bathroom, a decent tv, refrigerator, a very generous storage amount and nice laminated flooring so wasn’t freezing every morning, including the black out curtains. The room had a perfect temperature at all times, not too hot and not too cold. The bathroom itself is a wet room with a nice powerful shower. Although the room may have an ‘old’ style to it, this added to the amazing experience as you’re in Lapland! Not a Marriott! The rooms were cleaned beautifully by the housekeeping team everyday at around midday, but didn’t bother us as we were out early! And the view from our window was amazing! We went half board, so every morning there was a very nice breakfast, including waffles, cereals, homemade oatmeal and hot food, although it was the same options every day, it was very nice. Dinner time was also a help yourself buffet and the options were different every evening, and there hasn’t been a dinner that I haven’t enjoyed. So many different foods to try and also Vegan, Dairy Free, Gluten Free etc section, so caters for all needs. The restaurant itself is lovely as seen in the photos below. I feel all other reviews and the website alone has awful photos and doesn’t advertise itself very well so hopefully this review can help you decide to go with this hotel. In terms of the area, it’s lovely, not near a main road, a 5 minute walk to the supermarket which has a pharmacy inside. There are activity shops left and right as you walk around the area so make sure you find the cheapest prices before you choose what activities to do. Back to the hotel, the beds in the rooms were super comfy, I’d even say better than premier inn, after skiing all day to be able to relax in the sauna and then lay in the bed was amazing, it was difficult to get out of bed every morning! Although the hotel isn’t at the bottom of the slope like some others, you can get a free (free with Crystal) ski bus that stops right outside the hotel doors every 30 minutes and takes about 7 minutes to get to the slopes. Although there is no swimming pool in the hotel, guests of the Yllaskaltio (Snow Princess) hotel are able to use the pool at Akashotelli (Snow elf) which is just a 10 minute walk down the road, and it’s a beautiful walk. The lobby in the hotel was lovely itself, had nice seats, fire place, as well as a gift shop. There was ski gear storage and there is also washing machines free to use. All in all, it was a fantastic holiday and was made even better by this absolutely wonderful hotel, we even saw the Aurora (Northern Lights) the first night we stayed! The other reviews on this hotel don’t paint a good enough picture of the experience you can have here.

Yllaskaltio Hotel (Snow Princess).. what a delight!

This was by far the BEST holiday we have ever had. From the flight in to the very last second it was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble and the Tui Elfs are fantastic.... special mention to pepper spice our kids personal fave!!! The hotel isnt modern but i think this added to the charm of lapland, felt very santa'ry (you wouldnt catch santa in a premier in) we loved the food,service and the room. It was everything and more....... already looking at going back again this year and wouldn't even think twice about staying at the same hotel again... home away from home... simply PERFECT 😁😁

AMAZING

Still at the Snow Princess on a 4 night stay.  Surprisingly decent.  Yes rooms are dated, stairs very steep.  Looking back on previous reviews these points have been mentioned numerous times and mgt have said hope to get a renovation soon, 10 yrs down the line looks like it's still considering it.  Saying the it was clean, room for 5 was small, our room was a riot with clothes everywhere.  Would b good if there was somewhere you vould hang your snow suits on properly.  Shower wasn't the best, luke warm.  Downstairs reception area was lovely, rustic and upstairs dining area lovely too, very large room with floor to ceiling with windows and found it very cold to eat in.  High ceiling won't help so wrap up when going in there.  Food decent I thought, was expect it worse, food was warm, soups lovely.  Food was fine abit repetitive but warm wholesome so you left full.  Kids choice poor though, chips n nuggets.

Sledging outside the hotel isn't great, get yourself on the ski bus timetable at reception get yourself to the northside of the fell, sledging is fab and next to the is the ski slopes.

Outside the hotel turn left walk down t junction turn left then you'll see the small shopping centre, large reindeer then further another shopping mall go outside there you can find the lake along with the swing.  Ensure you stay inside the poles on the lake to walk safely.

So tiring with all the gear on but worth it,  so it's a heavy day.  Don't over pack we ended up wearing most of our clothes most days as there clean.  Brought 2 cases what a waste as only changing undies etc.

Pleasantly surprised 

A very nice hotel. We had a great time at Hotel Yllaskaltio. Whilst the rooms are not that modern and a little dated they were very clean throughout and our room had very large windows with an excellent view of the Northern lights. Staff were all super friendly and helpful. 
Breakfast was all very efficient and tasty.
Our only complaint was the complimentary drinks voucher we received upon check in, we only used the bar in order to redeem it but were told after our drinks were poured that it wasn't valid against alcoholic drinks, there was no mention of this on the terms and conditions on the voucher. A bit annoying but apart from that would love to stay here again in the future.
