When booking this, my friend and I were initially drawn in by its prices (considerably cheaper than most other hostels in Puerto Viejo). 

Arriving at the hostel we were pleasantly surprised, considering the (surprisingly) low ratings seen on here and other websites. The rooms are a little bit basic but the beds are comfortable and they are all comfortable with good mosquito nets - a necessity in Puerto Viejo.

Blue Butterfly has a decently sized kitchen which is great for people on a budget, whilst the staff are super friendly and helpful.

It is located less than five minutes from the centre of Puerto Viejo and five to ten minutes from the nearest beaches. Supermarkets are also super close. Further, there is a nice bike rental place right on the doorstep where you can get bikes for $5 a day and easily explore the beautiful national parks and beaches in the surrounding area. 

Really couldn't recommend it more highly, especially if you're on a budget.

Lovely hostel with really friendly staff

A strange, weird place, I wouldn't call it a hotel. Placed in a wooden building that once could be a storage of some kind or maybe a house of local people, with various kinds of fabric hanging everywhere. The room we have is a on a terrace and the matress stinks. The bed has a mosquito net which is dirty. The bathrooms with showers and toilets are strange, with no tiles. The towels aren't included. The kitchen looks dirty with worn out pots, frying pans and other utensils. The Internet is slow. We pay 12.900 CRC, that is 22$, you shouldn't pay more than 5$ for that!

DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!! This 'hotel' is gross and everything the owners post (on Tripadvisor and on Booking.com) is a lie. On Booking.com they describe themselves as beachside - but the hotel is about 1km from the beach. Besides having dirty sheets on our bed, the whole place was dirty and full of bugs. It is NOT a 'nature hostel', much less 'the only nature hostel in Puerto Viejo', as they describe themselves. Many hotels in and around Puerto Viejo are in jungle areas and surrounded by forest, but are maintained clean and as bug-free as possible. My husband and I paid for a private room and it was not private at all - there are basically curtains or plywood around mattresses to make it qualify as a 'room'. Besides being unclean, bug-filled, and lacking privacy, the place is terribly noisy, with music starting at club-level at 9am in the common areas. AVOID.

ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. AVOID!!!

Not even deserve the name hostel. Better to catalogue as some pieces of wood put together to make someone earn money. It shouldn’t matter how much you pay per night to have your business clean and decent for customers. We slept the first night on a “mattress” (see picture) that was wet and sheets were used as well. Not even one day we got a cleaning of the room. Every room in there got breaks which make easier for animals to get in. Mosquitos is normal, cockroach in your bed means you don’t know what is to clean a place and maintain it. And they say they renew the place one year ago, JA!. Pictures are old, they don’t even have a place to stay all together and comfy (only 2 hammocks, the rest are seats with “mattress” in where you could lose your back). I’ve seen for 3 days the same dead worm on the bathroom floor along with an empty shampoo. Also seen 2 volunteers left because of the conditions. Someone really should go to this place, make an inspection and close it for good!

This place should be shot down!!!

On town probably is the cheapest option, but if you go there you'll know why. It's a very old infrastructure and lack of maintenance. The owner, nice lady, is trying her best to make this place comfortable but in my opinion is like trying to fix a sinking boat! To old to be fixed. 
The toiltets are very poor and basic, among 3 only 1 has "hot water", the common area (balcony) has a nice view but the only table looks like a carpenter working table and the 2 couches are very dirty.
Our private room was not comfortable, smelly pillow (mold) and very old mattress. Not a nice sleep. Tons of Mosquitos

Ok is a place for young backpackers, but doesnt mean that young backpackers deserve a filthy place.

Two days later, in Panama I've met two random girls and I've started to describe this place and before saying the name of the hostel they already understood that i was describing blue butterly since they've been there as well. Same feeling, worst ever hotel/hostel.

Sorry to say that, this place has to be taken completely down and rebuild!

Make a favor to your self, don't go there!

This place didn't feel comfortable at all. Broken planks, Scrub metal and non helpful staff, smelly bedsheets. Don't trust the online pictures! We left the place just after one night, even thought we paid for 5 nights. very disappointing.
