The hotel is finished in beautiful wood. It is comfortable and boasts fantastic views across the Lake LLanquihue. The food was good and the staff friendly and helpful. It was a delight to walk from the comfortable bedroom to the dining room.

This hotel was booked as part of a larger itinerary travelling in Chile and Argentina. When I read the reviews on TripAdvisor I have to say I was dismayed.  

Sadly the place was as described by others. It is very dated and desperately in need of refurbishment. 

The location and views are stunning the rooms are large, the hotel itself could have so much to offer. I'm pleased to say that there was hot water and the beds are comfy. 

With investment this place could really be something special

Dirty rooms, useless and disinterested staff, a swimming pool that was advertised but not available.  The rooms all needed a complete renovation and the staff needed retraining. I have not one good word to say about this hotel. Please don´t take the risk of ruining your holiday.

Avoid and don´t make the same mistake as us

I stayed here as part of a large group for the last 2 nights of a charity cycling trip. Initially the hotel looked quite promising compared to some of the other places we had stayed over the previous week. The facilities didn't really match up. The rooms were of a reasonable standard, no real complaints there. The location on the lake was nice, you can swim in the lake but the water is very cold.

In particular the swimming pool was filthy and completely unacceptable, a health hazard and I can't believe they even have it open for guests. Also, they didn't appear interested or bothered in opening the bar for us. You would expect them to have the sense to see 50 guests celebrating the completion of a tough cycling challenge over the Andes as a real opportunity to make a big profit on drinks.

They had an outbuilding with a function room where they put on a meal for us. There was a huge spit roast and barbecue where they cooked some massive cuts of beef in front of everyone which was quite memorable.

There are a few restaurants and bars nearby and it is close enough to walk into town. I really liked Puerto Varas as a place, it seemed fairly upmarket and we found an excellent seafood restaurant for lunch and a great steakhouse one evening. If I was to return I would look at other places to stay as there must be better options.

Not good enough

I think the most charitable thing that could be said of this hotel is that it is not without a certain faded charm.  The best thing about it is that the rooms in the main hotel are a little funky and have a nice homey feel to them; they're light, have nice views of the lake and volcano, and have furniture that is rather more interesting than the standard bland modern hotel norm.

But as others have noted Los Alerces is rather dilapidated.  The annoying thing is that some of the minor issues could be fixed very easily: burned-out lightbulbs, taps that drip because they need new washers.  A friend who also stayed here had a more substantial problem of a leak through the bathroom ceiling.

Tip: if you stay in the main hotel (not the cabanas), make sure you get a room on the third (top) floor ("Tenemos tener una habitacion en el tercer piso?")  As with many hotels in Chile, the floors are not well soundproofed and you can hear the people above you moving around (or engaged in more, um, rhymthic nighttime activities).

Would we stay here again?  Well, maybe... It does have a great view.  But I'd certainly give some of the other many hotels in Puerto Varas a good look before I booked at Los Alerces once more.
