I'm surprised nobody has reviewed this hotel in English yet.  I was taking the train from Graz to Salzburg and wanted to break my journey, so I chose Schladming.  I got in after dark and left the next morning, but I wasn't all that impressed with what I saw of the town.  Although it has some restaurants and bars, banks and supermarket, it's not particularly charming.  It probably works better as a base camp for skiing or hiking.

The hotel was decent and the staff in the cafe, who handle things in the evening were welcoming and helpful.  My room was huge (it was off season).  The wifi didn't work in the room, but it was pleasant to go down to the cafe and have a glass of wine while checking my email.  Since it is associated with a konditorei, I naively thought breakfast would feature croissants, kuchen, etc., but no luck.  It was the standard white rolls and an egg.  The one sour note was the unfriendly manager who was downright grumpy when I checked out.  Still the price in October at least was very reasonable and I felt good about the place.

The Schladming rail station has to be one of the worst in terms of signs showing how to get to the town center, at least if you arrive at night.  Unfortunately for me, the person I asked told me to take a route that took twice as long as the direct one.  Here's how you do it:  As you come out of the station, take a left, walk past the bus stop sign  and keep going, even though it is poorly lit and looks like a road to nowhere.  It will bend around and get to you the little bridge across the river about five blocks from the center.  The whole thing takes about 12 minutes, and is easy in the daylight.
