A lovely place, feels like staying in a house and the host was friendly too but an item of my clothes has been stolen from the washing line and as I reported it, it was taken very casually and no much attention was given, there is no gate to the property, no cameras, and it has happened before I was told! This has unfortunately spoiled my stay and I wouldn't stay again under the same security conditions.

Great place and host but terrible security!

We stayed at the friendly hostle for 3 nights and really enjoyed it. Gary is such a great person - helpful, kind  and caring
The place is clean and you feel like home. You can Rent bikes for free. The Beach is 10 min walkingdistance - it is paradies!

Perfect Place to stay

Jai didn't spend 2 nights at this backpackers. Lovely but very discreet owner, he used me to share my room (in a kind of house with 3 bedrooms, living room, sdb and kitchen) with a somewhat strange woman (she spent her time sleeping in the living room, deep TV, for 1 week). Except that the other 2 rooms in the house are empty and seeing this lady's rather unpleasant behavior he was aware of, I don't understand why he didn't put me in another room further away from the living room so that I could have a little peace of mind! Certainly to facilitate the cleaning... Old room Jai, not a quiet locker trash (so I left nothing of value to my lady in my car, I had to do with the cleaning that I didn't have to do with the cleaning, but I didn't have a real sense of security in the house.

To be avoided!

I read some good and bad reviews, with some people saying the manager was rude.

I now realise why some people didn't like the manager. He is not rude - just very direct, blunt, and to the point. He definitely lacks people skills and really should be in an office job away from people. He may think he gives good customer service, but I would not employ him. When I asked him for local information, his replies were inadequate and so fast and to the point, that I ended up having to ask somebody else for the information I needed. This was disappointing, and this hostel could be much better with a manager who gave the impression he cared more.

If you are not easily upset and can tolerate the manager, then the place itself is good (I only gave this hostel 3 stars purely because of the manager).

The lay out of the hostel is good. Each 3 dorm rooms has it's own kitchen, lounge room and bathroom. 

There is only one bathroom (one shower and one toilet in the same room) for 10 - 12 guests. When the hostel is full this would be a problem. If someone is in the shower, then you can't go to the toilet. More showers and toilets would be welcome.

Good hostel, but indifferent & blunt manager

Our stay here would best be described as indifferent. We arrived late, but the guy on reception advised us it was only a short walk or to take a cab - the walk was easy enough. All arrangements were left in the safe. The owner/ receptionist also arranged our Fraser Island day tour, which was very helpful. My only gripe was that he took outstanding room payment and trip deposit on my British card without consent - not sure how he had access to this as we booked through hostelworld 🤔 but anyway.. hello fees galore! It was a shame we didn't actually get to see him until the day we left - got the impression he came and went as he pleases rather than being rigid with office hours. The room and hostel itself was okay, it was more like a mini apartment. Couldn't fault the cleanliness etc. Could be the time of year, or perhaps a general vibe of this hostel but it was very very quiet. Stay elsewhere for more social vibes. 

Quiet but nice

This Hostel is one of the best Hostels I stayed in. 
I booked a 3 bed room and I actually got put in a 2 bed room. I've never had that before in a hostel. 

I really enjoyed the stay there - it didn't feel like a hostel, it felt like Grammys house. 
Old furniture, but quite comfortable and because we were just 4 people in the hostel it was so nice and small, we made friends. 

Thank you for being such a nice Hostel! The name friendly hostel does fit at all! 

I will come back when I'm in hervey! 


Great Hostel!

I spent 3 nights with my girlfriend in this hostel. I start by saying that it's a hostel so it should be judged by its category and so you don't have to wait for who knows what. The check in was self-service since we arrived in the evening. The room was quite large even though with very old furniture, as old as the structure itself. The bathroom was in common with the floor as well as the kitchen. We both found it quite clean and orderly. Then there weren't many people so we were very calm. In the room there was the minimum necessary but all in all we were pleased with the experience in its entirety. I stayed with definitely worse rings and so I feel like I would recommend this hostel to anyone who was looking for a moment of support while it was really on the way to the base. In the most basic part of the tour, it has the price that varies.

Minimum required

The booking went very smoothly, I got an email right away asking if I needed a pick-up service from the Greyhound bus. When I got on the bus, there was a friendly woman who picked me up right away. When I got to the hostel, there was a happy surprise waiting for me. I had booked a hostel. This turned out to be an apartment, with three double rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room! Getting a double room instead of a back room is great! Gary, the owner, also booked a tour to fresher Island for me. All that was totally smooth! Of all the hostels I've been to in Australia, this was the most familiar and recommended! Just to recommend!

Cozy hostel

The price-performance ratio was perfect. The room was clean and tidy. The kitchen also made a very clean and tidy impression. You can also eat on the porch. We didn't hear from the street because the room was on the inside.

Perfect for the small budget.

I went there in 2010, and I went back in 2014 with great satisfaction. The result is the same: the reception is Australian, the rooms are spacious and well maintained, the price remains very attractive (especially for Hervey Bay) and the big advantage is the proximity to the ferry to Fraser Island. So frankly, if Hervey Bay is your stop or starting point for Fraser Island, don't look elsewhere, this is really top!
