This place became a life saver!
We initially were booked in at Lils on the waterfront for a 2 night stay for my birthday last monday, they cancelled our booking because of flooding, but didn't bother to inform us before we travelled, so was not happy when we turned up to find it closed!.....anyway we managed to get the attic room here at minster hub (room 8), it was lovely & homely, close to the minster and town center only a short walk away, and about 10 mins to train station. Modern bathroom/toilet/shower & towels, comfy bed, tea & coffee facilities and they left spare teabags etc in the small foyer in the entrance to help yourself. Sofa and TV plus they provided a hair dryer. Only downside is 4 lots of stairs and if you're tall maybe an attic room with sloping roof would not for you, but we were ok as we're only 5ft 3".  Enjoyed our unexpected stay here and would defo stay again....thank you for rescuing my birthday treat all was not lost!
A lovely little restaurant around the corner called Taas Nepalese, family run and had a lovely meal there.

DO NOT STAY HERE!  DO NOT STAY HERE!

MY WORST LODGING EXPERIENCE IN OVER 50 YEARS OF TRAVELING THE GLOBE.  THE MOST DISHONEST, UNCARING, LYING, DECEITFUL PROPRIETOR IN THE HISTORY OF LODGING.

THE STORY:

I made a non-refundable reservation to stay at the "Minster Hub Guest Accommodation," York, England for two nights in June, 2022.  The reservation confirmation stated the owner would meet me at the property for check-in (unknown to me there is no desk, office, meeting area, or permanent installation - nothing; just a small cement door stoop on which I sat.)  I anticipated the owner would be present to meet me...NOT! The property simply consisted of two locked solid door entrances in two different adjacent buildings.  Two cement external stairs led from the sidewalk to the outside entry in each building where several lock boxes were affixed to the wall - that's it.  Not even a doorbell.  I tried yelling through the mail slot in the door, but no one was there and I could not see anything through the slot.  I HAD NO IDEA WHICH ROOM I WAS IN, HOW TO ACCESS THE MAIN DOOR AND HOW TO OBTAIN A ROOM KEY - IT WAS VERY UNNERVING.

While sitting outside on the door stoop, I called the owner on the number in my reservation and it went to his voice mail.  He identified himself on his voice mail as "Abed."  I left him a voice mail stating I urgently needed him to contact me as I was sitting on the door stoop outside his building, dusk was falling and I needed entry.  I noticed the closed and locked restaurant in the same building had a different phone number in the window.  I called that and got the same voice mail from Abed.  I left him a second message, and then waited.  After about 45 minutes of sitting on the cement stoop it was getting dark and, being extremely frustrated and concerned about where I was to stay that night, I started calling other hotels.  After several failed attempts, I was finally able to speak with a hotel that could accommodate me on short notice.  While still on that alternate hotel call, the owner Abed called me.  I nearly screamed at him "Where are you?  I have been sitting on the door stoop calling you for nearly an hour.  You are supposed to be here to check me in!"  Without apology of any kind, he instructed me through the rather complicated process of accessing the correct lock box in the adjacent building and accessing the room (he made no offer to come by and assist).

BUT IT GETS WORSE...

After a long, hot, tiring day I took a shower in the room at about 8 PM.  Upon exiting the shower, I discovered there were NO TOWELS!  As you will read in the text history below, I texted Abed and told him the situation, and that I had stood without clothing in my room for half an hour air drying.  Without apology of any kind he said he would attempt to "chase some towels" for me; he did not say when he would bring them by (any caring owner would have apologized profusely and brought them right over - neither occurred).  By then I was apoplectic.  I texted him that this was unacceptable, that I was going to find other lodging for the next (second) night and I wanted a refund for both nights.

HERE'S THE KEY SALIENT POINT: HE CLEARLY AND UNEQUIVOCALLY AGREED TO A REFUND FOR BOTH NIGHTS VIA TEXT EXCHANGES; THAT ALONE SHOULD END THIS DISCUSSION.  In return, I agreed not to post any reviews of my experience (a promise up to this point that I have kept).  I left the next morning before checkout time, as agreed, and moved to a more expensive hotels nearly a mile away, which move was a major inconvenience instead of using my limited time to sight-see York.

Coincidentally and menacingly, when we talked about terminating my stay and a refund I asked him his name.  There was a pause, and he said "James" (though I had learned from the two voice mail messages that his name was "Abed," and I so confronted him with this information.  Caught in his lie; he did not respond.)  He even lied about his name for goodness sake!

AFTER AGREEING VIA TEXT TO THE REFUND THERE WAS NO FURTHER COMMUNICATION FROM HIM WHATSOEVER...AND, OF COURSE, NO REFUND.   NOTHING WAS HONEST OR RIGHT ABOUT THIS MAN OR HIS PROPERTY.   My inquiries were ignored. (See text history).

In conclusion, this unethical dishonest owner agreed to refund me for the two nights I booked at his lodging.  HIS AGREEMENT TO REFUND LEGALLY WAIVED AND SUPERSEDED ANY REPRESENTATIONS OF THE LODGING TERMS BEING NON-REFUNDABLE.


DO NOT STAY HERE - WORST LODGING EXPERIENCE AND WORST PROPRIETOR  EVER

We were quite happy with the apartment, it was safe and secure, the bed was really comfy and we were thrilled with how local we were. The main issues we had was with the bathroom, we had a dodgy blind in there which made using the shower and toilet awkward on an evening as people lived opposite, the blind also had chewing gum on it. The shower was quite hard work in terms of the connection from the hose to the main shower it was leaking and the water didn’t get very hot which was frustrating! Other than that we really enjoyed our stay here and the makeup mirror was such an incredible feature, never stayed anywhere with one before and I was super thrilled with this!

Safe and Secure

Was a bit apprehensive after reading mixed reviews before I came… but I had nothing to fear because the room was great! Clean and comfortable, everything worked and great location! Could hear sirens on the busy street below at most hours of the day/night - but for a city Center this is expected. I stayed in room 7 (double bed room) for 2 nights and was very happy. Bit pricey but as a treat it was worth it. Initial communication could have been better/sooner as I really value confirmation from the property, but after I managed to find the contact details, the communication was good and clear. Key access was explained clearly and little chocolates, tea and water were even left in the room. Thank you for a fantastic stay! Will definitely recommend or come again!

The pillow and bed are really comfy wifis a bit bad but other than that it’s a binge place to stay with about a 5 mins walk to the York monster and the centre of York the sofa is also quite comfy the tv isn’t that bad just a tad slow 

Good 

Very basic clean rooms but as described. I visited York recently and wanted somewhere in the centre that was not too expensive. The accommodation is very basic and things did need fixing or updating however it is as described. There is no reception and the landlord doesn’t answer the phone or emails so no use trying them if you need anything. 

The room was clean but a few stains on the bed sheets, everything worked in the bathroom however the paint was peeling off the walls in the shower and the blind was broken so everyone in the adjacent buildings could see you changing and showering! The poor person in the apartment over the road had a direct view to our toilet from their kitchen!

Wouldn’t go back

Very basic but as described

Main plus point is the location, very close to historic York centre. 
Access easy enough, once we figured the keys out. Parking nearby not cheap, but that’s not accommodation’s fault. 
A few minor quibbles, the extension lead for the bedside lamps didn’t work, managed without. Also the tv was faulty, no signal available, but we weren’t there to watch tv. WiFi signal not great, bit hit and miss. The bed wasn’t great, bit flimsy, and only 1 pillow each. And lastly the toilet, took an age to refill after a flush, and very noisy. 
Shower was good, and everything was clean and spacious. Plenty of tea, coffee and sugar, and a noisy fridge to keep the milk in.
Probably spend not much more for a hotel next time in York

Adequate

The location of the guest house is fantastic, this guesthouse is within walking distance of all of Yorks main attractions. Sadly the bed in room 9 has broken springs which make a loud racket upon any slight movement, the bed must be replaced. The toilet is stained and needs a good bleaching and cleaning, sadly at the back of the property is a pub with loud music blaring so an early night is not possible. This accommodation is ok for the price however simple improvements must be made!

Fantastic location

Shabby chic room with good en-suite  - simply and stylishly furnished in muted colours (tho no dining space as advertised). Basic service: self check in via text message (make sure they have your right number) and no breakfast. Only caveat is mattress could do with replacing, but serviceable.

Location is very central for all the sites and although the road can be busy I had no trouble sleeping . For the price, a good option. If you want breakfast, more extras and a social space you’ll pay 20-30 more per night.

Used minster hub for 2 days cheep trip for two room was basic bed room nice bathroom like i always say if you want 5 star pay 5 star prices excellent position for york centre literally on your door step parking round the back 10 pound a day tea and coffee also in the room . York is a very good night out 300 odd pubs lots to do in york visit the minster viking centre and the museum all in all great
