This used to be our go to hotel for special events and away days. This however changed when I tried to book our wedding reception for 25 
 people in September this year (this was January). 
2 initial emails went unanswered and when I followed up with a telephone conversation. It was obvious they did not want us. Obstacles we were met with were 'we could fit you in', not love to have you' 'will there be children' 'yes 2' one 11 one 12' ' we should be able to accommodate them' how will you be arriving? coach by about midday ' oh you must be sat down by one pm and you cannot have a drinks reception and you must be finished by 5pm so that we can lay up for dinner, you must use an approved florist. If you want rooms you had better be quick. 
Guys if you can't do it just tell the guest. We had a budget of £10k but that wasn't of interest. All in all a poor experience for what was meant to be a lovely day by the river

Was The Best Except For A Wedding

What an amazing restaurant.
The location, setting, the room, and of course the food and the staff  - all exceeded our expectations.  We treated our family to the Christmas day lunch, one of whom was the previous reviewer (who gave a "Terrible" review regarding our lunch).  As you can imagine, we couldn't agree any less with the comments made in that review.  AJ and the other staff could not have been more helpful, and the food was delicious.  We all had four wonderful choices for each course, all of them difficult to choose between.  We are very much looking forward to coming to the Priory again.

Exceeded our high expectations!

Dreadful Christmas Day experience and felt as though they didn’t have a chef. £200 per head for Christmas lunch: and not even a drink on arrival. The service was incredibly slow, 

The food was tasteless, cold possibly as service so slow and ingredients not seasonal. I  doubt the food was locally sourced. 

I called 3 days in advance asking if they could provide a plate of the Christmas vegetables with a Yorkshire pudding. Well when I asked on the day I was made to feel incredibly uncomfortable. 
I was given a bear plate and half of a side portion of tasteless cold veg. 

They asked if I’d like anything else and I said a Yorkshire pudding and when paying £200 per head you would think the chef could provide this especially as been requested 3 days in advance. Also the restaurant was 2/3 full. 

I had to ask for gravy and stuffing and even though I said I wasn’t eating meat I was given a slice of pork stuffing! The Bread sauce not cooked and cold. 

Christmas pudding was a sponge with cold custard on it. 

Water came in a jug that even a school wouldn’t use and glasses not topped up. 

£1200 for six meals and four of the party said what an appalling meal and experience. Dreadful.

Don’t go

Glorious. Looks like a picture postcard. Restaurant was first class, world class. Room was older than most countries and rather more interesting/quirky. Plumbing bang up to date. Shower was great, bed nicely balanced between firm and comfortable. Service up to scratch. Location bang in the middle of town, in a beautiful part of the country.

Tiny wee quibbles - a hook or peg behind the door or on the wall to allow hanging up full length coats (it's mid winter) would have been appreciated (the wardrobe was waist-height in the eaves).  Also some sort of shelf somewhere in the bathroom so you had space to put out your bathroom stuff would have been good. 

Glorious.

A pretentious head chef that is scared of change. Asks for agency chefs then abuses them! Do not eat here it's meat and veg charged at a huge price tag! Do not done here unless u are rich. Greedy owners and a fake invironent.ggfffddfffffdffffddfrfffffffrrr

Awful greed

We stayed for one night on 13th February.  This was a treat for our wedding anniversary. 
Room was excellent with large comfy bed.  Spacious bathroom with a big bath and large shower cubicle.   Excellent G&T's in the comfortable lounge and then dinner in the new restaurant.  Alas the dinner was disappointing.  Although we were only two people, when each course was brought to the table we were asked which of us was having which dish.  The quality of some of the food was disappointing.
When we stayed here last in December 2022 the service in the dining room and the quality of the food was faultless, but alas, not this time.  Not sure why such a marked deterioration, was it because it was a Monday? Or the day before Valentines? Or a combination of factors?  We will never know, but hopefully when we next visit things in the restaurant will be back to the high levels we have enjoyed previously .


Lovely room but disappointing dinner.

Pleasant location, comfortable small rooms, lacking atmosphere, pricey.

Have read other reviews which seem accurate for lower scores.

Was keeping this short and to the point but have to write more.  Nice location and garden but not for a visit in February!

For one night only.......!

Superb accommodation,location,food and service,who could ask for more! Atmosphere in hotel was incredible,staff couldn’t do enough for you. Priory in wonderful location on the river with lovely views over the fields where deer could be seen.
 A wonderful experience which I hope to repeat in the future.

A perfect Diamond Wedding anniversary.

This is a review of the garden room restaurant on Thursday 2nd Feb for lunch. I arrived, solo, and without a reservation whilst I was out exploring in the area. 
The greeting was friendly and I was given a superb table in the corner, nearest the river. 
My waiter was fabulous for my entire time there. I went with a negroni cocktail to start (my favourite and 'go to' drink) and an excellent one arrived.
Bread was delicious and piping hot. 
I went with the scallops from the treat yourself menu and the pork from the a la carte. Both dishes were phenomenal. I had a glass of delicious chardonnay (that I selected by a blind tasting offered by my waiter!) Overall my lunch was perfect in every way!

Exceptional!

Evening with friends .

It was a weekend we were all looking forward to. We have visited the Priory many many times over the years and have rated it highly. The setting is stunning and the staff are all very attentive, polite and efficient. 

We started by having drinks in the lounge which was wonderful and Christmassy. 

We were served canapés which were acceptable but not outstanding. 

We then went through to the restaurant which was buzzing and we were all looking forward to some delicious food. 

Well, how disappointing. Sadly the food has gone from being incredible to very average and not memorable.  Such a shame. We were all a little bemused by this. 

Our starters of the soufflé were dry and not luxurious as they sounded. 

My main course was luke warm when it arrived. 

It’s not a cheap venue (which we are fully aware of) and for the four of us it was jolly expensive which one doesn’t mind paying if it’s outstanding.
