The most amazing pub , I have ever visited.  The beef and  blue cheese pie was sublime.  
The atmosphere, friendly; as many dogs as people, all  were well behaved and clearly regulars.  
Lisa , the manager, was wonderful, friendly, and hospitable.  Will definitely be returning in August when we are back in the area. Thank you so much for making our day.  The 3 vicars!!

Wonderful food, atmosphere and new friends.

Had an early dinner here after a walk with our dogs.
Such a friendly and cosy place! We all received a super warm welcome and enjoyed some great home cooked, comfort food.
Homemade hummus, delicious crispy squid. Followed by ham, egg and homemade chips for me; and a jackfruit  (!) pie for the other half.

This is a proper country pub for locals, walkers, dogs, kids….everyone!
We will be back 😊

Perfect post walk pub

Warm and friendly welcome after a winter walk in the beautiful countryside around Penallt. Really enjoyed our good value lunch. Varied choice of meals with interesting vegetarian options, always a bonus. 

Winter warmer

Used to be the best restaurant for miles around with an excellent reputation. Gone through some changes of ownership in last 5 years. Now a pub with standard pub fayre (fish & chips, burgers, steaks etc) with a MCC food rating of 3/5. Food was average, ambiance lacking with outside drinkers queuing at bar in restaurant  which spoils the dining experience. Loose dogs and children everywhere. Unlikely to return, which is a shame as its a great building in a stunning location, cute village and great views. Average price for average food and beer quality. A long way from what it once was.

Disappointing 

Stopped off for a drink, very welcoming, beautiful large garden ideal for dogs, owner Chris is very friendly and very accommodating as we took our small reactive rescue dog. We sat out back and enjoyed the spectacular view, will definitely return... 

Great find

Had several meals here while i was away for the week.the girl behind the bar made us very welcome,it was a reduced menu as i think theyre not been in there long.
Tues night was homemade pizza night which are cooked in the pizza oven at the pub the choice of toppings was endless.
We also tried the steak and fish both cooked just right.
No rooms are available at the moment.

Hidden Gem

Called here for a light lunch. We both chose the Welsh rabit on sourdough. The actual rabit was really tasty. Unfortunately it was served on what looked like a slice of brown bread, not sourdough. The side salad consisted of a bit of water cress and 3 small pickled onions. For a price of £8.95 this light meal was too small and off the pace. Best value in this pub was the baggettes

Unattained potential

Stayed for two nights whilst attending a motorcycle rally based at Inn which is now a function venue not a pub / restaurant anymore. We had the "Special" rate of £89.00 a night which isn't cheap but acceptable for a good B&B which this at one time was.
When we went for breakfast Saturday morning we presented ourselves at the bar only to be asked "is breakfast included with your room?" anyway it was but there was no table laid as you'd expect as residents, just sit anywhere help yourself to tea and coffee and i'll get your breakfast (no cereal, fruit, juice etc. which you'd normally expect for nearly £90 a night) when breakfast was served it was the £5 breakfast which was being offered as a special to other bikers that attended the rally and were not guests of the B&B Nothing like advertised on the website! - sadly I was disappointed as the breakfast at the Inn on previous occasions was fantastic.I did mention this to the bar staff but didn't get a response apart from "well you have got a discount on the room!"
Sunday was slightly better, I was offered orange juice and the breakfast was larger but still the same set up as Saturday. To be honest the breakfast we did get was actually very good, very tasty but when i'm paying £89 for a tired room i like a proper breakfast.
As an events venue this place is great, good staff and service the limited food / snack menu is very good (I had lunch twice) beer is okay and not too expensive, so if they can get the B&B sorted it would be a fantastic place.
The room we had (3) was very tired, the shower grout was discoloured, the water temperature valve in the shower was broken, duct tape on the bathroom threshold, TV remote didn't work attention to detail is not great and If a discount is given on a room please don't discount the breakfast too - people like to be served breakfast in a high end B&B, it's not a Travelodge.
I really love this place and would stay again, It just needs some organisation TLC & attention to detail, or just drop the prices to become a budget B&B! don't misrepresent yourself on the website please.

A shadow of it's former self

Its fun to find the place in the dark travelling up the narrow roads into Penallt but when you get there its stands warm and welcoming.   Its a village pub, in a pretty hill top village, with a few rooms.  The guests mingle with the locals in a pub with great atmosphere, well kept real ales and a great restaurant menu. Your are welcome from the moment you go in through the door.

The room, not overly large, but really comfortable was very quite over night after closing (about 23:00) so several really good nights sleep.  This sets you up for an excellent breakfast sitting either in the sun room or on the terrace looking out over the Wye Valley.  

Restaurant food is really good and if there on a Thursday its woodfired pizza night.  That's not just any pizza that's restaurant quality pizza and starters coming out of the outdoor pizza kitchen whilst you watch.

If only the WIFI extended to the rooms as there was no mobile phone or 3G signal as its out in the sticks.  Works well in the bar though so another good excuse to have a pint.

Superb few days in a great welcoming pub with rooms

We popped in to this place on Sunday evening for a drink,we were given free roast potatoes which were absolutely gorgeous,I wish we had been earlier so we could of had the full roast dinner.
We booked to have the pizza ,so pleased we did it was worth every penny.
The best part for me was the desert ,Eton mess it’s to die for.
I would definitely recommend this place,it’s got a lovely ambience,the staff are very good and the owner is really friendly.
We were lucky to be staying nearby.
