I still have not been to the hotel. But when I called to make a query and a reservation, the person on the other side stated " I did not hear anything what you said, You are very loud. It is actually deafening. Can talk quietly?". I had to hang up as this kind of articulation of expressing such uncomfortableness lacks of hospitality and deserved cutover service. She could have stated this in a more customer friendly way. I had to hang up and decided to cancel my reservation.

Calling Experience - Not Good

Stayed at the Belfry in October for 2 weeks, we wanted a simple, reasonally priced base for our trip around Sri lanka. Rachel and Chris worked hard to make sure we enjoyed our stay and we most certainly did ! The in house food was wonderfull especially the choice of indian curries!. Fair enough you can get cheaper food else but not as good quality. It was shame that it wasnt busier !!
It was also enjoyable to meet their family including their two young girl. V.Polite !
We also would like to praise then on arranging our island round tours, we could not find cheaper online or whilst we were there.
Once again thanks for a wonderful holiday and all the best for the future 

Tradition British Establishment !!

stayed here a while back. Not too impressed with the bed.. kept collapsing (hope they sorted that), ripped me off regarding food, I picked a curry for couple of times from their menu in the evening for guests staying at the guest house. (they have a menu which is the same for outside guests which is more expensive.) they had a gaul to charge me the higher prices! when I complained they put a "few extras on the bill" they even charged me for an extra cup of tea and an extra egg... all this was not made clear when I arrived..I spent almost a month there. they did not try to help with anything during my stay (perhaps because I have Sri Lankan friends) . The pool was dirty and when I asked when would they clean it, " when i have checked out", what kind of answer is that? did not have a good experience, shame as I spent a fortune there.. and when i left early morning for the airport.. Rachael couldnt even be bothered to get out of bed! what kind of service is that! recommend other places on south west coast which are a lot cheaper and more friendly.

Average stay

We chose this hotel for a rest at the end of our trip around Sri Lanka in August. We selected it from Trip Advisor on the basis of the good reviews and its competitive price. The owners are certainly friendly and helpful.
 Unfortunately we had to leave after 2 nights ( it would have been 1 if possible!) because of:-
1. The main Columbo to Galle railway line runs 10m from the bedroom with trains throughout the night. The noise was so great that the building actually shook and each train blew its siren as it was passing. The old Indian locomotives were deafening and definitely NOT funny at 2,3,4 in the morning!
2. At precisely 4.30 am there were 6 bells from the catholic church 100m away followed by 10 minutes of latin chant and  what can best be described as "Happy Clappy "Music blasted out from a loudspeaker high in the tower and facing our bedroom. The volume would have done justice to a Glastonbury pop festival! It seems that the church is in competition (or opposition) to the Muslim population of the area and their much lesser volume call to prayer, and is trying to make a point.
Incidentally there is no local beach, it takes a Tuk Tuk to get to one.
I have posted a picture of the rail line and would have posted a video with sound had this been possible on this site.
We are so glad that this was not our final impression of Sri Lanka. Luckily we moved to the  Unatawuna Beach Resort near Galle and had a superb 5 days. (See review of this)

The Elephant in the Bedroom

We stayed at the Belfry for 2 weeks in April.  We chose this hotel mainly because we wanted to be closer to 'real' Sri Lanka rather than an all inclusive resort, and it was a good choice.  The room was spacious, clean, air conditioned, supplied with mosquito nets, coffee making facilities and with a nice balcony overlooking the pool. The hotel is located about 400m from the busy town of Beruwela - but dont expect lots of bars, amusement arcades and fast-food restaurants - Sri Lanka isn't like that.  The nearest example of a european type bar is Pier 88 in Aluthgama on the Bentota River (a couple of miles away). Although the hotel is close to the beach - sunbathing is best done at Bentota Beach or Beruwala Beach - a few minutes by tuk-tuk.

The owners Chris and Rachel were great - very helpful and supportive - with the kind of welcome that would certainly not be found at a larger hotel. In the evenings they were always around for a chat over a drink. We were also able to make use of some of the trips offered through Mahinda - resident taxi and tuk-tuk driver - who was good company as well as a source of local knowledge. All the staff at the hotel were friendly and polite - and Silva seemed to be able to cook anything we required.

The Belfry may not be as swanky as some of the five star resorts, and it could be noisy from time to time,  but there is nowhere we would have rather stayed - it contributed to an amazing holiday.  Was also surprised how cheap it was - especially considering the amount of beer we drank......!

The staff was very friendly, the cook Silva prepared excellent curries, the owner was helpfull arranging the transfer to the airport and cheap Tuk-tuk-rides. The room was clean (with moskito net and AC, with tea and coffee making facilities) and the large balcony overlooked the small swimming pool.
But unfortunately the busy Galle Road was very near so that you could hear and smell the vans, busses and cars by day and night. You need ear plugs to get to sleep. The beach on the other side of Galle Road can't be used for swimming or for a walk. You have to go to Bentota beach or to the hotelresort of Beruwela.
