I have mixed feelings about la Y Griega. 

On the positive side of things, I appreciated free wifi, chill hangout area to eat and relax, nice garden area, Hostal cats, central area (away from the bustle of Bocas Town, but on the street that splits between goingto Drago Beach or up the coast to Bluff beach, with good swimming beach nearby), no smoking allowed in common area, decent price ($30 for private room), and an outdoor shower in the garden. 

On the negative side of things, the hostal felt very dirty to me, near the lodging area the house smelt strongly of humidty/mold, and very morning in the communal kitchen, rat/mice poop was everywhere(!!!!!) on the kitchen surfaces, even on some of the tables in the common room. I also saw bread and other food completly nibbled at. Based upon this, I decided to keep my food in my room in a box. The hostal should invest in some plastic containers to allow people to store their food so that it is not tempting for rats/mice. They should also make this problem known to those currently staying there (although if you're an early riser its quite obvious based upon the amount of dropping found in the kitchen).

Chill Common Area & Central Location

quiet + 10 min walk from the beach + lots of trees! enjoyable... two year ago I stayed here for a week and loved everything except the manager (rude guy) but he is gone now! so everything was perfect. The price is amazing and you can relax at anytime. Downtown is like 2 miles away, you have to enjoy the ride on a bike and that’s all, there are always available and free! kitchen is just fine, amazing common area with perfect lighting. This time I slept on a tent - amazingly I had the best sleep here than anywhere else while traveling for a month. Would always go back to this hostel. + I did tried a couple more but the problem always is - too loud!

I had my own room there in February for two nights.  
The staff was nice except the manager.  I was getting ready to check out and one of the staff members told me I could leave my bags in my room while I showered and it wouldn’t be a problem if I checked out a few minutes late.  However, when I tried to check out fifteen minutes late the manager told me I had to pay another night and got VERY confrontational. I told him I was told I could check out late by his staff and he escalated the situation and I insisted not to pay.  It was extremely unpleasant.  
As I was getting ready to leave he got friendly with me again all of a sudden and pretended nothing happened and acted li,e we were friends.  I had planned on leaving my bags at the hostel and hang at the beach but after the experience I felt like my bags could be dug through when I was gone.  I have been traveling two months since this experience and it was the worst experience I have had and one of the worst values overall.  

Rude Manager - Stay away

We recently stayed at Hostal Y Griega for 3 nights when in Bocas and found the accommodation to be perfect. Our private room was really cosy with shelves to store your things and had a mosquito net over the bed. The room was cool with the help of a fan and everywhere was really clean. The owner Lisa and her daughter are so lovely and helpful. Lisa shows guests a map of Bocas when you check in and explains the different islands, how to get places and what there is to do. This really helped us get our bearings and plan our stay in Bocas. The kitchen area is well equipped and has a nice area with benches for eating and drinking. It is out of the town but we personally liked this and it is only $1 per person to get into the town with taxis going past all the time. I would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone staying on Bocas, and we found it to be much cheaper than lots of the other options around!

Great private room

I stayed here for two nights and it was a nice stay. I stayed in a dorm room and it was spacious, clean and affordable. The owner is very friendly and helped me organise a tour. It's easy enough to catch a taxi into town.

Enjoyable

We really loved the whole atmosphere of this place. It is a very cozy place with a great sense of community. Everyone was super friendly and willing to share their stories. Particularly we appreciate Leo’s advice and willingness to help. He made our stay in Bocas so much better. 

Note: we rented bicycles when we were in Bocas and that definitely made our time in Bocas much better, the hostel is probably too far to walk to town and back.
