TRUST ME WHEN I SAY THIS IS THE WORST AIRBNB/HOSTEL IN POPOYO. LET ME YELL YOU WHY. MANAGEMENT IS NON EXISTENT. MAINTENCE HASN'T BEEN DONE IN YEARS. THE OWNERS ARE SLUMLORDS. ITS VERY DIDTY. THE BEDDING IS 20+ YEARS OLD. NO MATTRESS COVERS. EXPOSED STSI.S AMD SPRINGS. THE PILLOWS ARE THE WORST. EXPOSED ELECTRICAL AND PLUMBINGEAKS E EVERWHERE. THE KITCHEN IS FILTHY. THE GROUNDS ARE UNKEPT. LAUNDRY IS BROKEN. THERE ARE NO HOUSE RULES. VOLUNTEERS RUN AMOK TILL 4AM .AKIG NOISE SO PAYING GUESTS CAN NOT SLEEP. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN AND TAKE. OFF ALL BOOKING PLATEFORMS. HARD PASS ON ALL ASPECTS. THE ABSOLUTE WORST  IN POPOYO AREA.  BEAUTIFUL CLEAN UNITS NEXT DOOR AND DOWN THE ROAD FOR HALF THE PRICE.

I have traveled a lot, especially 9 months in Central America and I have therefore stayed in many hotels.  melting elefante was the best of all. simply.
Jamie and Dylan, the managers, are great people, always there to make you feel welcome and make your stay as comfortable and friendly as possible.

we had planned to stay 5 days, we stayed a month with the desire to settle there.

THE BEST HOSTEL EVER

My stay was quite awhile back, so lots may have changed but I've been meaning to share this experience. We were traveling with a 4 year old child and had booked our stay before we reached Nicaragua. I had emailed back and forth with the owner/manager and pre-paid for our stay. Two days before our arrival I'd reconfirmed our arrival and reservation with the owner/manager.

We arrived early evening to discover that the hotel had double booked our reserved room, our reserved room had been given to another family, and the owner/manager was out of the country. No one on staff could speak English and so I made do with my pretty-bad Spanish skills and the help of our driver who did a tiny bit of translating for us. At first the staff just shrugged and smiled a lot and seemed to indicate there was nothing they could do, but I kept insisting that we paid already and I showed her emails exchanged between me and the owner. 

We were gestured to follow someone on a motorbike to the other end of town where the hotel worker consulted with the owner of another hostel. From what I gathered, the other owner was somehow related to the owner of Melting Elefante or maybe the staff member; I can't be sure. Anyway, long story short, after some conversation,and a dusty walk back to the Elefante, they made up the "owner's quarters" for us, which - when you look at the main profile photo of the property is the room at the upper right of the building. It was clearly occupied and filled with the owner's stuff and lots of baby things. They changed the sheets, swept, and pulled a lot of personal items out of the room. It was a nice workaround given that there was lots of space, a private en suite, balcony and things that could entertain our child. I feel like the townspeople saved the day and it was through no help of the management that they worked the situation out for us. 

Breakfast was also challenging. The ground floor restaurant was supposed to specialize in pancakes. Except they'd run out of pancake mix, so I remember vividly one breakfast where they made us some terrible omelette that I think had fried cucumbers in it (or maybe some form of squash). It was really unpalatable, and it seemed to be the only thing they could offer us to eat. 

Another major problem we had is that they kept running out of water in our room.   A person came to our room to check it out and said we just had to wait. He pointed at a water catchment tower on another building and said the water was coming from there and it was going to be some time before it made it to our room, if at all. This happened more than once. One time, water eventually came to our room after 2 hours. Another time, it didn't arrive at all, and we ended up taking showers downstairs outside of the bar at the community "rinse-off" shower. 

I just remember spending more than $100 a night to be there. And it just didn't seem worth it to me for the amount of hassles we had to deal with. If they had their bookings in order, hot water... let alone running water, and decent food I think we would have had a more positive experience. Also it would have been nice if staff could speak English, but I don't expect them to. I'm in their country after all. 

I never received and apology or anything from the owner/management after our stay there. Too bad.

Lots of bummers

It’s unique hotel. Beautiful ocean view and amazing for surfers! We loved having a shared kitchen with food processor for morning smoothies. Rooms are huge. I would highly suggest to get AC remote for an extra as house gets quite hot. It’s a really friendly relaxed atmosphere created by a lovely girl and it cannot be compared to any other places around in Popoyo where hospitality is not their number 1 thing just yet.

Bad Place, Bad staff.
Rent a Surfboard with many nouns, after bringing back, they said, i made a new noun, so I had to pay 20$.
You should rent your board at another place! This is so unfriendly, bad and very unwelcome!!!

No doubt that you are going to enjoy this place, people are friendly, the quality-price is good, the view and the shape of this hostel reminds me of Gaudi and if you are a surfer this is the place for you.

A really Nice place

I stayed at the Melting Elefante for three days, Michael was the host because Marco was out of the country.  The pictures seemed a bit odd but they're far from representative of the actual place.  The rooms are wonderful, the people are friendly, and the sound of the waves are incredible.  Every afternoon all of the surfers gather right in front of the hotel to surf since it literally has the best waves directly in front.
