I stayed at 6 different places in New Zealand, and this was by far my favorite.  I'm so glad I picked it, even though not many reviews.  I stayed 3 nights, wished it was longer.  Let's talk location:  fantastic.  A nice beach is right across the street.  And on a lot of days, nice sized waves to play in, no rocks in the water and lots of sail boats to watch in the afternoon.  I went in the water the first afternoon, just bring your wetsuit.  Also if you want to walk to town, no problem- 10 to 15 minute  walk, but there are plenty of free parking spaces, so just drive.

The room had windows top to bottom, great for the summertime to open them and let the breeze in.  Had a tv, fridge, good wifi.  Shower had plenty of hot water and good water pressure.  There is also an outside shower with hot water to wash sand off.  I loved the shampoo and shower gel provided.   They even offered to wash our clothes for free, so unexpected and nice.    Gary had maps of the area and great suggestions to visit.

Now lets talk best part staying here, the breakfast.  Gary was once a personal chef for royalty in England and learned to cook there.  His breakfasts are excellent and such a value because you'd spend at least $20 per person in a restaurant.   I got flat white coffee(and you can have more than one), best coffee I've ever had. Much better than any I tried in a cafe.  The granola with yogurt, fruit, toast so good.( I tried this in a restaurant later in the trip, and no where near as good)  Different kinds of fruit, so good.  The yogurt a mix( I think it was regular and greek?)  And tried the french toast with bacon-great.  Next morning, had bacon, eggs, on french bread with tomato and avocado with fruit platter.  The flavor of everything, so good, can't believe he never went to cooking  school.   The last morning I had to have the granola , yogurt, fruit again.  I wished I would have been there when he made pancakes: I'm sure they would have been fantastic.

Overall, you couldn't find a better place for the value.  If I ever go back, definitely would stay here again.

cream of the crop: you will not find a better B&B

From when we walked into the room till the time we left we felt as if we were staying in a 5 star resort. Gary and Jennie are fantastic hosts and have set up their facilities remarkably!!!! We stayed only 2 nights but were treated royally! Gary's breakfasts were amazing! Our room was meticulously decorated and came with all the amenities for the beautiful bathroom as well as bathrobes, slippers and a safe. You have a private bath with an area for coffee or tea and even a couple of free beers to top it off. Should we return to Whitianga, it is our hope that the Decades by the Sea is available!!!! Thank you Gary and Jenny!!!!!!!!!

Decades by the sea was our first stop in NZ and it was a perfect one in every single detail. Garry and Jenni are terrific hosts that put their hearts into making your stay unforgettable. The breakfast is extremely tasty and very well presented, the sheets and the mattress are very comfortable, the cleanliness is immaculate, rounded up by the detail of the bathroom products of high quality... Last but least, I have to mention the view and the sound of the ocean tucking you into sleep. Probably the best B&B that I ever stayed in!
