Overpriced and misrepresented. More a guest house than a hotel , with just 3 rooms in the house of the owners. Watch out the photos of the view of the rooms are not necessarily from the room! Actually only 1 room, the ‘honeymoon suite’ has a view over the water. The other rooms are on the side of the house and have only plants in Front of the window . When we made a comment about this on arrival, the owners asked us to leave, as we would be ‘bad ‘guests . They did take the money for the two nights though and refused to pay it back. These were the two last nights of our anniversary trip to NZ and it left a bitter aftertaste. ( owners were not kiwi’s) . Luckily we found a great alternative, less expensive, better than its photos and with friendly owners. There are way better places for less in this area ! 
I recommend to avoid this place if you have the choice. 

Overpriced and misrepresented. 

We live in the same region and are well used to amazing views/scenery but this set up is truly amazing! The view from our room encompassed most of the lower Queen Charlotte, birdlife below, boat activity and the most amazing scenery. Topped off wth luxurious service and the most accommodating, entertaining hosts, along with stunning food - seriously - we couldnt have asked for more. Thoroughly enjoyed this piece of luxury In our wonderful NZ

Spectacular views and Amazing Hosts - we were so spoilt!

We had a one night stay at Okiwa Bay Lodge.  Booked online as we were driving by and showed up 30 min later.
The view is as advertised, plus lots of bird life that you can hear as it’s so quiet.  We shot into Havelock for a nice country inn dinner.  Arrived back at the lodge for a nightcap and conversation.
Breakfast to order in the morning with two other couples swapping stories and experiences.
Susan and Martin were friendly and genuine hosts making this a special experience.

Wonderful view and friendly service

Warm and welcoming hosts Susie and Martin made us feel right at home after a long walk on the track. Stunning views from a lovely home. Spa pool for sore muscles and a home cooked meal. Very comfortable beds and well equipped rooms. We were very well taken care of. Would recommend.

Wonderful hospitality and exceptional views 

Background:
We booked our stay in Okiwa bay lodge as the last 2 nights of our 10th anniversary trip to NZ. We choose this accommodation because of the views promised in the photos. 
When we booked, there was only 1 type of room in the options, this room showed photos of the fabulous view over the water. There are photos in the room description that do not correspond with the reality. 
When we arrived, at 2pm, we found Okiwa bay lodge deserted, there were no other guests. Okiwa bay 'lodge' turned out to be 2 rooms in  the house of the owners, so hardly a Lodge, more a homestay or a airbnb type of accomodation. this was the first deception. 
Then Martin (the owner) showed us our room, which turned out not  to have any view to the water at all. When we mentioned that this was not our room, as the photos on booking.com showed the view over the water, Martin said he didn't know.
Next to the fact to the room was not the one showed in the booking, it was also dull and next to the living room which is not amazing for privacy.

So we were just talking in a normal tone of voice on this topic, not more than 5 mins, when all of sudden Martin - which was acting very strangely since we arrived -  shouted out: 'Enough, I want you to just go to your car and leave !'

We couldn't believe what we heard so we asked him to repeat what he had said, as we were sure we misheard, but he repeated exactly the same, adding: ' i can see already you will not be happy guests so I want you to leave'
Susie looked as surprised/shocked at what her husband just said as we did.

As Martin clearly said he didn't want to accommodate us we said, OK, if you don't want us to stay, we will go , but you can't charge us for the room.

Susie then took Martin outside to talk to him, they came back and said: it's ok, you can stay.

However, by then we of course didn't feel welcome anymore, and also didn't want to spend our last 2 nights of an amazing trip in a 'weird, unprofessional mom & pop' set-up , in a room without a view (which was sell in fraudulent way as the product we were shown and bought was not the one we got)

And off course, after all of this, they did charge our card (700 NZD) despite not providing the service and the accommodation

 So to conclude, this is a very unprofessional accommodation operation, that is operating in a fraudulous way, both in how they present their accommodation (it is not a lodge but a guesthouse at best, and the photos are not of the actual room), and in charging people for a stay, after they, as owners decided they didn't want to host us.

I'm sure the owners will find a lot to say  to try to contradict my review but as you can see on my history, I very rarely post negative reviews and have absolutely no interest or pleasure of doing so but I believe for such a case,  travellers considering staying at this place should be warned of what the weird, unpleasant and fraudulent experience expecting them

For the rest, we had an amazing 3 weeks trip in NZ were every other places we stayed were great !

A trap - avoid it

If you are looking for that extraordinary experience when visiting the Queen Charlotte Sound area, you must stay at the Okiwa Bay Lodge!
Incredible views and the most delightful hosts you could ever imagine. We were on our honeymoon and absolutely loved every minute of our stay. Our room was fabulous and the pre-dinner wine on their terrace at sunset and the dinner meal Suzie and Martin prepared for us was one of the highlights of our 5 week stay in New Zealand. It was as good as any 5 star restaurant and we have travelled the world. 
If you are a seasoned traveler, don’t miss this jewel of a place. Words cannot describe the views you will enjoy of the Sounds and the opportunity to mingle with these two very special hosts. 
We loved it! And you will too!

A Stay Like No Other!

We booked the honeymoon suite last minute. We were finishing up our actual honeymoon and were coming off a couple of rainy days of campervanning in Abel Tasman and were excited to find a nice place with a great view and a hot tub! Susie and Martin could not have been more welcoming and helped make our stay special and enjoyable. We’d highly recommend!

Honeymoon

We stayed for two nights along with another couple travelling with us. We had booked the two rooms with the most magnificent views overlooking the Sound. It is just like the pix. Wonderful to wake up in the morning to this view. Our hosts Martin and Susie make the stay extra special. We found it like staying in a home with friends. We especially enjoyed meeting up with other travellers and hearing of their daily adventures over breakfast and also dinner. Martin and Susie go out of their way to make everyone feel so welcome in their lovely home. Very comfortable beds. If you are travelling in the area, maybe looking for some R & R after walking the Queen Charlotte Track,or simply looking to explore the area and maybe do a day walk on the track, then you would not find a better place to stay. Very highly recommended. 

A wonderful place to stay. 

I stayed here a couple of years ago and knew I had to come back.  I had a wonderful relaxing stay and two lovely dinners with Susie and Martin. The view is outstanding and the lodge is exceptionally comfortable. It was even better than I had remembered it and my stay was exactly the relaxing time I needed. Everything is top notch. While it is a lovely places for couples,  it is a welcoming place for solos as well. If there is anything(pretty much anywhere in NZ) that you have questions about, the hosts are great sources of information as well.

Come for the view but stay for dinner

We stayed at Okiwa Bay Lodge for 6 nights and from the moment we arrived we knew this was going to be a very special place for us. Susie greeted us with a huge hug full of the warmth and friendship which she and Martin showered us with for our entire stay. Our accomodation was cosy and comfortable and together with the delicious breakfasts and dinners we were totally spoilt. Each day we enjoyed a new adventure with detailed suggestions from our knowledgeable hosts. It was a perfect stay at The Queen Charlotte Sound with the most beautiful views while enjoying a drink on the deck - it doesn’t get much better than staying at Okiwa Bay Lodge.
