You cannot beat the free shuttle/pickup service they offer here in a huge Toyota van! I saw reviews here complaining about the cleanliness, aging facilities, etc. and yes it needs a reno but the futon and other facilities are clean and staff was smiling and kind, especially breakfast staff. Just watch out for the wild animal poop if you go in the traditional garden. The shape is in the kanji character for love, but be prepared to love wildlife up close. Needs daily maintenance. 

Free shuttle, good value 

This is a traditional, family owned small ryokan.  A very good location close to Nikko Tosho-gu.  It's a 10 minute easy walk.  If you are looking for a traditional ryokan experience this place is perfect for you.  The building is dated and no fancy amenities but the staff at this ryokan goes above and beyond to help your stay comfortable.  They will pick you up and drop off  at the station.  Just make a call when you arrive at  the station (make sure to clarify JR or Tobu railways) They have public bath with natural hot springs.  No private bathtub in your room so just be aware if you are not familiar with Japanese onsen ryokan.  
The food is great both dinner and breakfast and again, the staff is great taking care of you.

Good for families with small children too.  I would definitely recommend this ryokan.

Traditional ryokan in a great location

I felt very welcome when I checked in. The whole place is very peaceful and calm. Also during the night so I slept like a baby on my futon. I tried the breakfast and can recommend that. For the price (800yen?) it was really worth it. The staff were friendly and they even drove me back to the station when I checked out.

Amazing place

I have to disagree with some of the reviews I've been reading here.
If you're looking for a shiny hotel to feel "like home", then this is not the place.
If you want a traditional stay for a fair price, enjoying the famous Japanese care and service, don't look any further and book right away.
This is an old traditional Japanese Ryokan. Yes the place looks oldish, and yes a few things have been worn out along the years. This is what makes this place so welcoming.
You feel taken back in time as soon as you step in.
The rooms are extremely comfortable. The food is great and very traditional. The Onsen is exactly how you should expect it in any real traditional Ryokan.
The cherry on top is the staff: service at its best, simply. Everybody has been doing their best all along to help us for all aspects of our visit. Places to visit, restaurants to go to, driving us around in the hotel shuttle, recommending walks in the area...

Service at its best! What you see is what you get.

The bedroom was a good size but no shower so I used the communal bath area.  the bed was comfortable and it was nice and quiet.  The breakfast was good value and logs of it, continental or Japanese.  Tea/ coffee in the room and also available in the foyer. The staff were really good with the children, there were lots of toys for them in the foyer and they  were given fish food to feed the fish in the garden.
