A very nice hostel in a quant historic building. It is well maintained and nice and clean. We stayed in the family room with tatami floor. It was quite comfortable. The staff is super friendly and helpful!

Friendly and helpful staff!

We had just one night in Nagano but I am so glad we stayed at 1166 Backpackers, and I would have loved to stay longer! The hostel is in a great location, walkable from the station but close to the main street (Chuo-dori) and the incredible Zenko-ji temple (good for getting to the atmospheric early morning service!). There's also lots of great restaurants, bakeries, cafes around. The welcome at the hostel was really greats, like we were old friends rather than new guests, Minami showed us tips for the city, shared her knowledge and very chatty. We had a dormitory to ourselves which wasn't huge, but fine for our purposes, and it was warm (not always the case in Japanese accommodation in January!). It was a fab stay and I would definitely recommend to others.

Perfect little hostel with great hospitality

We stayed one night in a private room.  When we checked in, the host greeted us and brought us a coffee.  He then gave us a map and recommended a few spots to visit.

The building is a bit older and smaller, but our private room had plenty of space.  

After touring around for a few hours, we checked back in and there were 6-7 international travellers in the common area, all sharing stories of their travels.  As soon as 11pm hit, everyone went into their rooms, and it was very quiet.

Only downside is the shared bathrooms.

We would definitely stay here again next time. 

Great host and community

We stayed at this lovely hostel for three nights during our trip across Japan and really enjoyed it. The cozy atmosphere made us instantly feel comfortable. We slept in the mixed dorm room, which was small but provided enough space for our luggage. Our beds were clean and comfortable. Even though there was a lot of snoring going on at night, I slept like a log. Moreover, the staff were really welcoming and helpful. They have us many good recommendations for activities and restaurants in and around Nagano. All in all, the 1166 Backpackers is a perfect place to stay at when visiting Nagano and the Japanese Alps. 

Lovely hostel in Nagano

I stayed at this hostel for two nights in February 2017. I slept in the shared dormitory area, which sleeps 6 people on futons (another 2 around a corner - but they get a curtain over their separate space). There is lots of space to spread out and unload luggage in the dormitory.

The worst thing about this hostel was their stingy use of the heaters. I expected the inside to be a nice escape from the alpine winter outside, but this was never the case.

The shower is especially small (even more so than the standard Japanese small) and I couldn't sit on the toilet without my knees pressed into the door in front of me.

The staff were extremely nice and helpful. They were very keen to help us get around Nagano. They were still learning English so there were a few minor hiccups but this wasn't an issue.

For the price (more than I had paid at other hostels), I expected more from this place. Thankfully I met some good people that made the stay very worthwhile.

Could have been better

Stayed for two nights as a base to check out Jigokudani monkey park.  The staff were super lovely and made a huge effort.  They speak good English, but be patient as they're still learning.  The Hostel is easy to find and is in a nice part of town near some good food and drink options.

This probably isn't going to win any awards for party-hostel-of-the-century, as it's mostly middle aged Japanese men who've come to Nagano to hike/ski (at least when I was there in winter).  This made the atmosphere a little Fawlty Towers, but I had a private room in any event so was able to retreat in the evenings.

One thing to note - if you go in winter, the corridors/wash basins/toilet and shower are AN ICE BOX.  It was -5c when I was there and getting up in the middle of the night to use the facilities required full North Face Himalaya suit and gloves.  Here's to hoping they buy some door sealant and another heater next winter.

Tidy hostel-come-fridge in Nagano

The hostel is amazing, it has a traditional vibe, it is secure, well located, very clean, and the staffs are very helpful with all the requirements that you could have. I really recommend this place to stay in Nagano.
