My other half and I enjoyed our visit and did not find and bedbugs or other bugs. The inn is set in a quiet neighbourhood and many residents have lived there for decades, so it has a very different feel to a city centre hotel or newer inn. It was quiet, peaceful, and even with the tiny bathroom and extra charges we had a good time. We went to an okonomiyaki restaurant nearby owned by an old school friend of the Aoi-So's owner and it was very similar - a little shabby but clean and with wonderful food. We felt we'd definitely seen old school working-class Kyoto, and for us that was a good experience.

Long ago, but we enjoyed our visit

I choose this hotel since I can check in 12 PM! I arrive at KIX 8.30 so I actually arrive in Aoi So Inn 11-11.30 PM and the owner is very nice to let me inn since my room is ready. It's great thing, since I can rest a little and have a nice shower. It's easy to access the hotel by subway, it was just a short walk. The owner (sir, I'm sorry I forgot your name) let help me take my pictures in the garden. He also very nice showing me all over the hotel rooms. He inherit the hotel from his mother, mama san, He speaks English very good for his age. He speaks Spanish fluently and speaks french to me too. It's turn out he study in Spain during his young time. For 2 old people running a hotel, they done a great job. The place is quite clean. I dunno with other people, but he quite fond of me and we chat a lots

Just Right for Me

Aoi-So Inn is a ryokan-style hotel geared towards backpackers etc with a common kitchen available. For various reasons I selected the 1-3 person room with its own bath and enjoyed the room very much. There was even a separate small garden just for this room! I am notvery tall (172 cm) so I usually fit in with Japanese size things. Very large people might find the private bathroom a tight fit. Our host was very friendly and had many suggestions on places to visiot and on how I could get to places I had on my own list. Aoi-So inn is within walking distance of the Imperial Palace grounds (a couple of kilometers) in one direction, the Daitoku-Ji in another direction. It is close to the subway and to the efficient Kyoto bus-system. I can recommend this inn to everyone who is not too large and who doesn't have problems lying/sitting on the floor.

Nice and friendly, a lovely garden

Quite a good surprise for the very low expectations. Only for one night that was quite an adventure but it turned quite a good surprise. Except the location and no breakfast available this was a quite good experience and the owner is very nice and helpful.

Very Traditional and typical

We loved this hotel, the owner was freindly but didnt speak too much english, the room was large and traditional. Even had a little Japanese garden! The sleeping arangements were fine and the futons comfy. The bathroom was small but perfectly fuctionable (be aware if your heavy set though!). The communal kitchen was really pleasant too Awesome if you are trying to travel cheap! overall lovely, 10 min walk from the underground and a bit of a pain to get anywhere!
