You get what you paid for (I know it's one of the lowest charge for onsen). It was advertised for 800 yen but we were charged 900 yen admission, additional 200 yen for a small towel (make sure you bring your own bath towel with you). The facility is very old and the atmosphere inside the osen is just OK.
The locaation is convenient, it's just a 5 min walk/incline from the Hakone/Yumoto station.

Just a OK osen

I didn’t read previous reviews before staying - simply chose this place for its proximity to the train station and traditional onsen. Although short, it was a very steep climb to get there! Check in was good with the host using a translating machine to convey key messages. My room was very basic but adequate. Unfortunately the air conditioner was very old and didn’t manage to cool the room sufficiently to enable sleep. I had turned it down as far as possible and left the curtains closed in the hope the room would be cooler when I returned the next day. Was disappointed to find the temperature had been turned up again so again it was an unbearably hot night. The onsen was tucked into the hillside and was nice.

Budget friendly but basic

traditional ryokan run by elderly couple and daughter, understaffed; they do everything, reception, cooking etc.  not the cleanest place and in need of mending. traditional squat toilets only.  the room was shabby.  the nearest hostel to the station, almost literally on top of it.  they do warn you to take it easy with heavy luggage, the ascent is very steep, it is built into the hillside.  evening meals seemed to be available, they looked traditional. a "kappa" is a water imp and there is an amusing collection of Japanese imps in the cabinets.  the onsen which was part of the ryokan was outstanding, it was a bit smarter than the rest of the building and you could just relax for hours in the evening with fresh thermal water pouring into the pool every ten minutes, this was most enjoyable.  the price was not so cheap at 4500yen but an onsen visit in town cost 1800 so this was not so bad.  the standard was not great but I liked this place in spite of it.  the view of the town in the evening was quite pretty from the high point.

grotty but nice

My friend booked me into this ryokan because she wanted me to have the experience of staying in one.  Unfortunately, it was not the nicest place I stayed in at Japan and I am sure there are better options.  The ryokan is conveniently located above the train station, however, this also means that one gets to hear the trains passing by.  The ryokan itself looks very run down.  The main building, in particular, looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a long time and smells of mildew.  I stayed in a second, adjacent building, that was cleaner and had private bathrooms.  The room was all right, but again, everything looked like it could have been cleaned better.  The bathroom was dusty and toilet had a dark ring in it.  There were also dead flies on the tatami mats.  The onsen, however, was very nice, and ultimately, I was able to enjoy my stay because of it.  The staff were also friendly and helpful.  For the price, however, I don't think this place was worth it, especially given that it cost as much at my much nicer hotel in Tokyo.  I would have rather paid more to stay somewhere nicer.

Nothing special

I booked into this hostel after the recommendation of my flatmate, who stayed Xmas 2010. After reading a few of the reviews on here, we had another booking confirmed and cancelled this booking,

Japannet.com takes 25% of your booking if you cancel between 7-14days. Very steep. This mean over £30 cancellation when I cancelled 14days from checking in.

Careful of booking

I couldn't believe this type of Minshuku even existed in Japan.

1, It was run by an elderly couple which is fine but it was way understaffed. 
2. Dirtiest toilet I have ever been to in Japan. 
3. The whole room/hotel stinks. 
4. Rude 

Only good about this minshuku is super close to the train station.

Worse experience in Japan

I spent one night in this "hotel" on May 24, 2014. Just terrible ! By Japanese standards, even worse ! Living in Japan for 2 years and knowing the country for many more years, I have been in other same types of minshuku (family type or B&B Japanese hotels) which were as old or older but this one is the worst I have seen: everything is or looks dirty/stinky, from the rooms to the toilets or the 'dining' room with its sticky floor. It is quite noisy as it is just in front of the station and windows are (as in many places in Japan) not isolating much from noise or heat/cold. Linen may not be cleaned after every client as after our night, they just folded it and put it back into the drawers ... May be only the bath (onsen) could save a bit this place although it is below usual standards of such kind of minshuku. Location is convenient for those who need to be close to the station but mind the steep access. If not, pass your way.
Last but not least, its price at 4,700 JPY/person (incl. Japanese breakfast) is well far above its value.
I have seen that there are a few other minshuku or ryokan in town just a few minutes walk from the station. Try there, for the same price, I'm quite sure it won't be worse than this one...
