Mimatsusou Ryokan

This was definitely our most unique and probably our favorite stay in Japan. The elderly couple and their daughter run this small bed-and-breakfast ryokan (which fits about 8 guests in total). When we arrived, they stayed up late to wait for our arrival and greeted us with cookies and iced tea (we stayed in July). Every morning we woke up to a delicious and filling homemade breakfast of rice and side dishes. The facilities are a bit dated but also large and spacious: each room we booked actually came with two rooms, a sitting area and the bedroom. In the summer, the cool breeze from outside and the grassy smell of the tatami mats was a great way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. They also had an adorable, super-friendly cat called "Little Snow" that stayed in their office but sometimes came out to play with us when we were leaving for the morning. I usually have cat allergies but had no problem with this place. When we left, the owner drove us personally to the train station so we didn't have to bother with our luggage. They also presented us with small farewell gifts of origami, candy, and toys. After reading the reviews of this place, I had high expectations, and this hotel definitely met and exceeded them. If you don't mind smaller, more dated facilities and want an authentic, personal experience, I highly recommend staying here.
