The Valkenburg Hotel

This is a handy cheap and cheerful spot and great location in the heart of the village 
This hotel has a lot of character and the staff could do enough for you they were great did get a chance to try the food or the restaurant but looked clean and tidy 

We stayed in the Valkenburg Hotel in order to experience some of the historical aspects; is an end of terrace, three storey building c. 1820 encasing a Gibbsian doorcase. In 1858 the Valkenburg family bought the premises for £1,000 from the landlord Knoxes. We were told that the freedom fighter, Michael Davitt, who formed the Land League to protect tenants’ rights, addressed the people of Ballinrobe from an upstairs window of the Valkenburg in the late 1800s. The sense of history was enforced by paintings on the landing. Key information about deciding to stay in the hotel is whether the nightclub behind the hotel is open or not – it is noisy and prevents much sleep up to 3-4am. The décor is like going back in time; the 5 rooms are all on the 3rd floor, and there’s no lift. This is a family owned sparsely furnished hotel, but the bed and linens were comfortable and bathrooms clean. We enjoyed the repartee at breakfast, which was very good, as was lunch; sandwiches and evening meals along with takeaway are available. In fact, I did get some of the historical flavour and could imagine previous eras there. Memorable!

Staff very friendly, chatted away, made us feel very welcome.Breakfast was excellent, overall enjoyable stay. Great location, very central, on street parking. Perfect if exploring general area.ideal if you were attending the Ballinrobe races.

So we arrived and were met by Jill who was very welcoming and very helpful. As our stay was for business and we were leaving early, Jill kindly organised a kettle to make tea with homemade brown bread and left it for us in the morning. I found it very strange that you could not get breakfast before 10am. The hotel served its purpose with a clean bed however the shower was scalding hot and it could not be regulated. The showerhead needs descaling as it sprayed water everywhere. The showertray was nearly overflowing at the end of a quick shower (due to water temp). There is no one in the building in the evening. You are given a front door key.In this day and age the Valkenburg needs to up its game. We stayed in room 5 and while it is a spacious room with 2 double beds the shower facilities were very poor. 

Stayed here for the weekend with two pals. Great breakfasts, comfy beds and wonderful owners and staff. Couldn't have been more helpful. Probably the friendliest hotel I've ever stayed in! Definitely stay here again next time we're over.
