Yogi Lodge

If you are traveling on a budget or you are interested in being close to the most interesting parts of the city this is a great place. This is not a place to hang out  and wallow in the "hotel culture" that India is famous for. Rather it is a clean, secure place to stay while you explore the city.  The management and staff are experienced, polite, and trustworthy. They can be trusted. This place has a long history.

The owner is nice and helpfull, the location is good in the old city with some nice restaurants not far from the guesthouse, and also good prices.
Rooms are basics but good enough for a few days, good value of money

Good guessthouse

It is said to be haunted! There, I said it. But the ghosts are said to be friendly to the guests and are only after the owner. Staff is friendly and helpful. You can sit with them and hear the little horror stories about the hotel.The rooms are okay and are good for the price they offer. It is said to be one of the oldest hotels in Varanasi and is located right behind the Vishwanatha Temple.

Spooky! But okay for a budget traveller!

This hotel is really cheap but you get what you pay for : the rooms are dirty, the beds are super stiff, we had a private bathroom which was a luxury there but it was also super dirty ... we were supposed to stay at Kanha Paying guesthouse but they had messed up our booking so we were grateful this one had availabilities but that's it.
The room is so small it hardly fits a double bed. There is a window but it opens to the lobby which is noisy with all the people coming and going. No AC but a fan. Only one power plug...
But the hosts were nice even if not super helpful.
Beware of the tourist guides who appear like magic when you are checking in, and trust yourself to get around this city which is amazing to discover :)

Cheap 

We stayed here for a total of 2 hours and honestly that was enough. The building had no electricity for the entirety of this time although it was promised to come back in 10 minutes (every time we regularly asked) therefore the building was sweltering which was making our two ill friends much worse than they were originally. There was work going on and this made the building rather unsafe as well as the two workers staring at us the whole time. One of the rooms had a toilet that was unclean and smelt horrible and there were very unclean bed sheets in the other room that I won't even go into describing. It was horrible and this out us off booking places to stay online for the rest of our trip
