This was the third time we have visited Tanhau and we have loved each and every second. The property is great, Sunando our host Is the best host anyone can ask for, the staff is super friendly and knowledgable…. And the area in itself, just wow. True to its tagline, it is literally like your own private wilderness. Morning and evening walks, the sounds of the jungle, the endless stories, the yummy food, we truly can’t rate it enough. Looking forward to our next trip there again!

The best place for a nature lover. 

I enjoyed our trip to Tanhau so much that at first I thought I really should keep the place a secret! But...

We had heard of Tanhau from another friend and with the heat of Delhi this seemed like a perfect escape. Close enough for a an extended weekend break. 

The road to Tanhau - the last 4 km is unpaved and only a 4-wheel drive can come up its bumps and turns. We were picked up from the village below in a jeep and had an exciting drive up with fantastic views of Corbett and the valley below.

We had chosen to stay in the cottage Bagh which is the highest point of the property. It overlooked a range of hills and the forests of Corbett National Park and the river Kosi. Absolutely lovely. The hills shades of green and blue.

A verandah in front of the cottage was draped with hanging flowers that would gently sway in the breeze. The room is large and can sleep 3. The bathroom to my delight is large too, with small plants, and during our visit a largish (friendly) spider that did not seem to go beyond the vicinity of the plants in one corner kept me company.

We wanted to take the first day slowly absorbing our surroundings and it was only in the evening that we went for a gentle walk along the path we had driven up on accompanied by a staff member. 

We were to stay 3 full days, but after the lovely first day, at night a massive storm started. The winds howled. I think I would have been a little afraid but for the fact the cottage felt quite solid. It actually rained pretty much for the next 2 days before we were to leave. 

To get to the dining area we had to come down a slope and some steps. Not really steep but a bit slippery in the relentless rain. We were provided umbrellas and the staff offered to bring up our food if we did not wish to brave the weather (we did take them up on this for one meal). They were extremely attentive to our various needs coming up and down no matter how much it might have been raining at that point. I really appreciated this.

On the evening before we left it stopped raining. We went for another walk, rambling along, seeing villagers come to collect water, streams overflowing and despite such a wet 2 days wild flowers could be spotted between the ferns on the hillside.

A beautiful sky unfolded before us. Then Sunando who owns the place, called to tell me to go to the side of the cottage and there overlooking another valley we saw a spectacular double rainbow, which seemed to touch the earth. It was breathtaking!

Later at dusk Sunando took us in the jeep when he went to set up his camera traps. On the first night we had been there, he told us a leopard had visited. It must have been in the bushes as it appeared on the camera only minutes after Sunando left the spot. Then on that final night, as he had predicted a tiger came by. The rain would have washed away its markings and territory had to be marked again. The footage that he shared made it all so much more exciting. 

Tanhau is remote. There is no TV, it can rain and you may feel cut off. The internet at times comes and goes. Animals show up every few days (not on the property usually). if you are lucky you may hear them. The views are spectacular, the food is good. There are resident dogs and hens. You can go on gentle walks or hikes (that might be challenging for some); read a book or play a board game. If the internet doesn't give trouble watch a film or listen to music. 

But as the name implies - you must like tanhai or at least some solitude. It's good to go with friends but it is also a place where you can go alone. You will be very well looked after. 

We can't wait to go back!

A lovely place with spectacular views

Tanhau is an excellent getaway for nature lovers and adventure seakers or for people who just want to reconnect with their inner self! Spectacular views and breathtaking landscapes! 
Sunando is an excellent host and an amazing person, full of interesting n inspiring stories. His pack of dogs are a delight to have around. 
Each member of the staff is qualified in their own portfolio. 

Great place to loose yourself to find your innerself! Can’t wait to go back… 

Every minute at Tanhau is excitingly unexpected and totally worth it! 

An alluring place nested in the lap of nature. I was spellbound right from the drive upto the property and the destination.  Salute to the owner to have created space putting tranquility and nature above all. Nicely done up cottages with effective , efficient, polite staff with a high happiness index leading to excellence in the overall experience . The property offers loads of adventure activities however we choose to stay put and listen to the music wind makes through the trees and the sound the jungle makes at night , very sure we heard a big cat very close by . What can I say being an avid adventure traveller I got my share of the pie at a very reasonable distance of 250kms approximately from Delhi making this my preferred weekend excursion. Would highly recommend the place .

Absolute bliss right from the room, the views, the host, the gorgeous furry friends, the staff, the food, the drives and the many experiences. Would love to keep coming back for all this and more. 

Special thanks to Sunando and his endless stories on wildlife and experiences at Tanhau, learnt something new and exciting. I thought I was a beach bum but won’t say that anymore after Tanhau. One of the best places discovered. 

And yes, do pick up amazing pickles and jams at Harela, Ram Nagar. I bought a few and gave away to friends who loved it so much. 



Mountains,  Jungle, Dogs…what a great experience at Tanhau!

Tanhau is a very special place. My son and I enjoyed every moment of our stay. Thank you Sunando for sharing your vision with us, Umaid for your kindness and all of the staff for their friendly attentiveness.
Some of the walks (hikes) are not for the fainthearted,  but what a sense of achievement when you have done them.
The views are stunning and where else in India can you drink the sweetest purest tap water that you have ever tasted.

A very special place

If you read the Tanhau website and the descriptions resonate with you, book your tickets NOW. That's what we did after a two year wait through lockdowns and a crazy new world. It was a perfect holiday.

Kayin, aged 5: 
Sunando uncle, I like the place of your house because you got 7 dogs now. You had 6 dogs but 7 dogs is much funner than 6. So, I like the beach (read river), going on the ride (jeep rides), and I love the food what was yummy. Bye!

Kinaya, aged 9: 
I love the greenery around Tanhau. You feel free, you get to explore, go for walks with the dogs in the fog. It’s so clear at night that you can see Jupiter and so many stars, more than in the city. It feels like another world. If you are a nature lover you’ll definitely love Tanhau. Everyone should visit as it’s an amaaaazing place! I missed it as soon as I left. 

The four of us took the overnight train from Delhi to Ramnagar and drove up to Tanhau. A very comfortable journey. Such delight at experiencing the last stretch on the dirt track! 

Lots of hot tea, food aplenty, two long open jeep rides to the Kosi and Ramganga, many skies, many views, the silence, the jungle sounds, the hills, so many special things...but very importantly the people and dogs at the heart of it. 
Umaid so dignified, ever so expertly helping the children along on the walks and escorting us to dinner one night when we were sure there was a leopard on our roof! 
Bharat with his quiet presence kept our plates and stomachs full. 
Subhash deftly drove us around and set up picnics by the river. 
All ably supporting Sunando's dream that we were so lucky to experience just a little. His stories and videos are not to be missed!

We were lucky to be there when DD and Nilanjana were visiting for the fourth time. New friends who enriched our visit. 

To understand the importance of the dogs in the mix Kayin asked 'What's his name again?" 
'Whose name?"
"The human...'"
Mojo, Wolfie, Karma, Bolt, Shai, Shrek, and the occasional visit by Dollar, are who will make us keep going back. 

When? In 2 months now! We can't wait till April '23.

How special is Tanhau? Enough to go back again in 6 months!

We were looking for splendid isolation and we found it in Tanhau’s rolling mountaintop views. The river seems to flow into the horizon, the breeze and clouds climb uphill and up to the cabins, and the fireflies and distant lights suggest other habitation is far, far away. 
To top the natural delights is the fresh and delicious food and comfortable cabins. A real break that needs going back to regularly.

True getaway.

Our trip to Tanhau really hit the spot. If you're looking for a place that is peaceful, quiet and offers the comfort of home-cooked meals - look no further! The walks around the property led by Umaid were extremely enjoyable and picturesque. The host, staff and dogs were all very welcoming and warm. Highly recommend Tanhau for a wholesome and serene getaway to the hills!

An ideal hill-getaway!

Located in the buffer area of the Jim Corbett, this is a great place, away from the maddening crowds near the tourist areas of the park. On the flip side, if you want to go for a safari or some place nearby the 4-5 kilometer drive from the property to the main road takes a good 30 minutes because of the treacherous approach road. If you are driving your own vehicle then make sure you get a 4 wheel drive with high ground clearance. Two wheel drives will struggle on some of the slippery inclines. Or you can get to the property on their vehicles easily.
We booked their 2 room cottage “Chukar” for 4 nights for our family. This cottage is very well done with a large sit-out area with great views of the Kosi river valley and has a very well stocked library. We wanted to just chill, hence we did just one safari and one trip to the river in 4 days. We went on morning walks and small hikes around the property. Never felt bored even for a moment. There is no TV but their internet was decent. Airtel/Jio mobile connectivity was patchy.

The owner, Sunando, is prompt in response, very helpful and knowledgeable. The staff are also polite and provide great service. The food is decent and varied. 
One of the highlights for us was the gang 5 dogs they have, they are very friendly and quite playful during the morning walk.

This is a place worth going back again and again.
