Never having stayed in a "guesthouse" - it was 50/50 - an adventure. The reviews were all positive, clean property, cordial host etc. The price was affordable for Reykjavik, a pricey place. 

Arriving on the "red eye", early in the morning, I contacted our host, Herman. The airport is a bit of a drive into Reykjavik, but Herman said come on in, and he'd care for our luggage until the room was ready. Arriving around 10 AM - Herman met us at the bottom of the driveway, as we got off the Flybus, right in front of the guesthouse. (Guesthouse Helga is on their regular route). 

We talked a bit, Herman ran an errand, we sat in the kitchen drinking coffee, until he returned,15 minutes later. He showed us the rooms, and as he did, he told us the "rules", simple, be polite and courteous, and take your shoes off when entering the house.  We chose the "big room" on the 3rd floor, with a "fantastic" view of the city, and a little patio. The room was very clean, cozy and the beds comfortable. 

Five steps to the right was the shared bathroom, (we never had an issue with that, and the bottom floor bathroom was available too - take a "washcloth") and to the left was the little, kitchen - fully stocked - perfect. Herman was "Johnny on the spot". My expandable bottle had fallen out of my back pack, and Herman was kind enough to loan me a container for my powdered milk. Herman waived the 3 PM check in time, allowing us to check in early, and we crashed for hours. 

Herman was our tour guide - never interfering, but just casually asking us each morning what we were up to on our daily adventures. He was more than helpful. My daughter and I walked to town several times, a long walk, and as a "senior" I managed, but I would suggest the bus.  I logged 26,309 steps in one day!

We were fortunate to have a personal touch with our accommodations. I met Herman's wife, daughter and grandson, such nice people. So in the future, we'll use Guesthouse Helga as out "standard". Anything less will receive a lower score.

Couldn't Have Worked Out Better

This was a very enjoyable experience.  Rooms and kitchen, bathroom were very clean and well stocked.
Iceland is very safe and English used all the time.   Everywhere we went, we used charge cards and truly did not need cash. 

I suggest using a phone gps even when walking until you are familiar with the area. Get a bus pass the earliest you can from the city center info office. There you will also find the best bus route map. 

Our host could not have been more accommodating and helpful. We learned quickly to discuss plans with him and avoided many mistakes and lost chances.

在預訂前已事先看見屋主非常友善，到步後果不其言，很貼心，考慮週到，而且地方乾淨，一入住，已經詳細的介紹周邊的主地餐廳或其他有用資訊，而且浴室有提供shampoo, conditioner, shower jel 等唯一美好不足是距離市中心有段距離，而且 grayline 不停此處，但可直接步行至他們的巴士站，約10min距離。如從 grayline 買機場巴士到酒店，建議 to bus stop 已可，冇需到他們說最近的酒店 city hostel, 因距離差不多而已。
Guesthouse Helga 是我入住過感覺非常舒服的 Guesthouse。

屋主非常友善

Our family of 4, 2 adults and 2 teenagers stayed at Helga's Guesthouse as a jumping point to our rental of a camper to drive the Ring Road around Iceland. We spent two nights in two downstairs rooms.  The rooms were clean and equipped with blackout curtains.  We had a shared bathroom with shower and a shared kitchen.   The eat in kitchen was well appointed and is an excellent option for those who want to make their own meals.  It was clean and had as many gadgets as I do at home.  You can easily make meals, as eating out is quite pricey in Iceland.  With two teenage sons, we prepared skyr, fruit, granola, toast, coffee and cocoa, and easily could have made eggs each morning.  A small grocery store is a casual 10 minute walk from the Guesthouse.  We bought cheese, crackers, milk, skyr, fruit and bread.  Milk and bread are affordable in Iceland and are comparable to US prices.  A larger grocery store is a bit further.  The coffee and cocoa are provided by Herman.  Herman also provides wonderful tips and a map.  The guesthouse is adjacent to large park with walking paths, historic sites (old Laundry facility) swimming facilities, the football pitch/stadium, etc. We walked to the city center and harbor, but we walk more than most.  If you need a ride, Herman operates a taxi.  He took us to Kuku Camper on the date of departure.  His fares are fair....  We would return to Helga's Guesthouse if we were to return to Reykjavik in the future.  We recommend a stay there, if what we describe for our family would work for your situation.

Clean accommodations, friendly, knowledgeable owners. Stayed here for a few days at the height of the summer season. Located in a residential neighborhood about 30 minute walk from the center of town.
