A friend and I are both English teachers here in China, and we stayed at the Yixiang Hostel after a day trip to the beach ran long and we decided to stay in Shenzhen for the night. Our stay was just fine— but this is definitely not the kind of place for someone who isn't used to China.

We headed to the hostel after the buses stopped running, and to get a taxi from Dameisha Beach was not easy. Most taxi drivers simply refused to take us there (because it's in the middle of nowhere, we soon discovered), and those who would drive there were only willing to take us there if we agreed on a price beforehand (it's not unusual for them to be unwilling to turn on the meter for a drive that long). 

Once we got to the hostel, the reception didn't speak English (though they did manage to find one staff member who spoke a very limited amount to help us). 

We were the only foreigners, so there was a standard amount of gawking and sly pictures being taken by the other guests. People were loudly playing dice and cards until about 11pm, but after that things were very quiet. Safety was average— there were lockers, but our Chinese was too limited to find out if we could get the keys for them, and the rooms all had key card locks. 

The location is rather pleasant, as long as you accept the fact that it's a very long way by bus from the city. It was close to a small beach that wasn't crowded at all by Chinese standards (though by 11am on Sunday morning there were about 30 couples taking wedding photos), and the walk down the country road to get there was quite nice.

My travel partner said her linens were very clean— my towel was pretty stained and there was a minimal amount of mildew growing on the mattress cover, but nothing too out of the ordinary for humid Southern China. The upstairs bathrooms were all Chinese toilets, but there were a few Western toilets downstairs. The bathrooms all met local hygiene standards. 

There was a very inexpensive breakfast the next morning— a standard Chinese breakfast of steamed buns with some sort of filling, boiled eggs, and "soup".

All in all, it was a fine time. The beach was nice, and it was good to get out of the city for a while… just… don't expect a Western-style hostel.
