Last weekend I went to Itatiaia and thankfully chose this awesome hotel to stay in ! Very close to the National Park, almost in it. The road going up the mountain to get to the hotel is beautiful, not paved but in very good conditions, it's like traveling inside the rain forest. Saturday morning I sat for hours on my room's porch just taking pictures, watching the birds and  feeding my soul ... If you enjoy nature, birds, waterfalls, this hotel is a must ! The sound of water running down the mountain is just perfect plus the birds singing....

Awesome hotel, soothing enviroment !

My sister and I stayed at this hotel last weekend with our kids. It was such a great experience! We were received and treated so well by the owner, Ivan, and his staff. I can assure you they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. For instance, we didn’t have a car, so they offered to take us around, which was really nice. Granted, this is not a luxury hotel, so don’t expect sophistication and be ready to accept simplicity. However, I didn’t see the rustic aspects of the hotel as bad as one might infer from the poor review it received from the person who visited there with his family in 2011.  Perhaps that was a particularly difficult time for the hotel administration. But, whatever the reason that happened in the past, we now found the place cozy, pleasant and much cleaner than what we expected. As for the food, we all loved it. For dinner, I had the best trout in my life and breakfast and lunch were also really good. If you don’t mind simplicity and just want a relaxing time surrounded by beautiful landscapes, friendly people and good food, you should consider giving Hotel Chalés Terra Nova a try. I’m definitely planning to stay there again with my family in the near future.

A great experience!

Lodge is n need of repair. We stayed in a chalet which was fine. Breakfast and dinner was ok. Hot tub and pool area available but not hot enough to enjoy. They did warm up the sauna though on a sat night. 
Staff is very helpful. 

Lots of birds make the stay worth while

The access road from Itatiaia village to Hotel Chalés Terra Nova is bumpy and full of potholes, and so will be your stay at this hotel. Located very close to the entry gate of Itatiaia National Park, this hotel really looks like a gem on their website. Unfortunately, reality is very different, and our stay at the hotel, early August 2011, turned out to be a most horrible experience.

We were very lucky to only have booked 2 nights at this hotel. We had selected Hotel Chalés Terra Nova because of its proximity to the national park and because of its vast sports infrastructure - travelling with two teenager kids.

The sports infrastructure turned out to be a true night mare :

- the outdoor swimming pool was dirt and covered with leafs. Ok, it was wintertime in Brasil, so we were ready to accept this, but have a look at Photo 1, that we took of the outdoor pool.
- the first minute we entered the indoor swimming pool, we were shocked and couldn't believe our eyes. The water was so dirt and full of bugs (Photo 2 & 3) that a 1 minute swim surely would have made us ill for the rest of our Brasil trip. The building interior definitely had not been cleaned for months, as walls were covered with mold (Photo 4). The roof of the building was in a bad state as well (Photo 5).
- The football table was rusty like hell and one couldn't move the bars anymore (Photo 6 & 7)
- We then considered using the canopy walk, until we saw the platforms ... which were ready to collapse (Photo 8). What a shame!

Next in row was the restaurant : believe it or not, but breakfast was OK. Wish we could say the same about the dinner. It really turned us mad : the main dish on the first evening was a piece of cheap pizza - much worse than any other pizza we had eaten in Brasil. Wanna know what the main dish was on the second evening ? Exactly the same pizza!

The accomodation itself? Still wanna know ? Terrible as well !

Unfortunately, we were not able to fully express our dissatisfaction at the reception, as the receptionist lady did not understand a single word of English. But I'm sure she could read the dissatisfaction just by looking at our faces.

To conclude : if you ever consider to travel to Itatiaia NP, pick whatever other accomodation you can find near Itatiaia - you can't end up worse than staying at Hotel Chalés Terra Nova.

PS : the rest of our Brazil trip was just great - what a nice country, with lovely people!
