Homestay Bertha Sucre

We spend 4 days in Sucre with Bertha and Pepe and we highly recommend it!! Bertha and her family are really nice and we had the chance to spend some good time together, like going on an improvised BBQ outside with the whole family. They explained us a lot about the city and Bolivian culture and helped us plan the next day of our trips. We were impressed by their investment in human project and complicity.
If you wish to improve your Spanish, you also found your house. Bertha is a teacher and gives you Spanish lesson. 
To be noted : The homestay was stopped during Covid and the all the good comment that we found dated back from 2019. But I can assure you that it hasn't change 😁 we strongly recommend you to contact Bertha if you go by Sucre (her number is +591 70335141)

I stayed for one whole month with Bertha and her lovely family and took Spanish classes at the same place every weekday in the morning. From the first second after my arrival I felt very welcomed and got a nice, clean and spacious room with a desk and shared bathroom. WiFi was super-fast as well. Their house is located in a quiet neighbourhood that lies about 25 minutes to walk from the city center. Small shops are located within a few 100 m around the house. There is also a big supermarket close to the house, about 15 minutes to walk.

During my stay, it was a perfect mix between activities with the family/guests and privacy (if you need it). What I enjoyed most was that all of the activities were based on the familys daily life and were not specially organised for the guests. For example going out to a restaurant or bar in the evening, visiting the nearby market or just cooking together. Therefore, you can participate in the real life of a Bolivian family and learn a lot about their culture. There was also most of the time a mix of local and international guests there (often 3-4 guests) that led to very interesting discussions and activities from time to time. 

If your are looking for a room in Sucre that is more than a plain accomodation for tourists and if you want to learn more about the Bolivian way of life as well as share some of your cultural habits I would really recommend Berthas Homestay. 

We, a couple from Denmark, have stayed at Homestay Bertha for three weeks. From the moment we stepped into the house, we were warmly welcomed by everyone in the family. 

We immediately felt like being a part of the family and got invited to join different activities, both in the house and out in the city. For example we went to play Wallyball, the bolivian version of Volleyball, and also went to a pizza restaurant. We even went with the family on a Sunday trip to the country side to celebrate a birthday in the family.

We have had serval lunches and dinners in the cozy kitchen with the family and other travellers staying. We profited from the balance between socializing with the Bolivian family and other travellers from around the world. But there were never too many people staying at the same time. Just enough, so that you had the chance to get to know everyone. 

All in all, it´s the perfect base to dive into the Bolivian culture and become a part of it while practicing your Spanish skills. We had 4 hours Spanish lessons, 5 days a week, from an external Spanish teacher coming to teach us in the house, which was very practical to us. 

We really enjoyed staying with the family and want to pass on our warmest recommendations for others coming this way.

My husband and I booked to stay for 4 nights and ending up staying for 10! Bertha's Homestay has been one of the best places we've stayed during 8 months of travelling - Bertha and Pepe were so friendly and welcoming and made us feel like part of their family. 

Our room was immaculate with a comfortable bed and plenty of blankets, a desk and a wardrobe. The kitchen was well equipped and a great place to socialise with the family and other guests. The whole homestay was very clean and a lovely place to relax! 

There are lots of little tiendas, restaurants and a supermarket within 5 minutes walk, Park Bolivar is 10 minutes away and the Plaza 25 de Mayo is 15-20 minutes walk so we felt the location was ideal.

We did 15 hours of Spanish lessons during our stay and I felt so confident after them - Bertha was my tutor and she was fantastic :) My husband had Israel and Marisol, who were also brilliant. 

We cooked with Bertha and Pepe several times during our stay and they made us some delicious, traditional Bolivian food. We watched films and drank beer with them over the Easter weekend and they also took us on a local tour of Mercado Campesino where we learned more about the beliefs and traditions of indigenous people. 

We really felt like Bertha and Pepe were our family by the end of it and were so sad to leave! We hope to go back in the future at some point <3

This place was amazing. The Stay was quite familiar and warmhearted. The rooms are clean, reasonable sized and the costs are incredible cheap. I warmly recommend it and would come back if I go to Sucre again.

Had a gorgeous time with Bertha, Pepe and their family for a week over Christmas. It was an ideal break from the hostel circuit and so appreciated their generosity, including me in their daily activities. I ate delicious local food, got to share their Christmas fun, and even went to a gym class with Bertha and Pepe! Took some Spanish classes too which were very useful. There is plenty to do and the family will make you feel incredibly welcome. It would have been great to stay longer! If you’re looking for a rest from the tourist route, to get to know some of the local culture and to stay with a brilliant Bolivian family then you should look no further. Definitely a highlight of my trip.

Took 1 week of private Spanish lessons with SAS School. Teacher was Ismael.

Really enjoyed the lessons. Plenty of speaking practice. Had taken lessons prior to this so was perfect for practicing what I had learned previously in an informal and friendly setting.

In addition, Bertha picked us up on the first 2 days and provided coffee and snacks every day. A nice touch!

The only thing we missed was more of the social activities mentioned on the website. Also be aware the school building has moved and is still under development, so a bit rough and ready, but this didn’t affect the lessons.

We honestly had a horrible stay here. Bertha and Pepe were so nice when we arrived in the evening. But the next day, Bertha just started acting very weird. She was rude, borderline racist to my girlfriend just for cleaning the coffee filter in 'not the Bolivian way'. She didn't care at all about cleaning the bathroom (only 1 for 5 guest rooms btw), all the toilet paper lying around was so disgusting, but she gave us a long lecture about what we have to do to keep the bathroom clean.
Then when I was taking a shower, she turned off the water and the whole family left. This because you can shower for 'not more than 10 minutes and only once a day'.
Next morning we left and she didn't say anything. Very rude and awkward behaviour and this was not expected, especially after such a nice welcome and such great reviews.
