Well, we were desperate to find a place to stay for New Year's Eve in the center of Punta del Este and the only place available was the Aquarium Hotel. We were impressed with the staff who were very friendly and helpful.  Despite the rundown conditions, the room was ok for one night and the breakfast was adequate. Yes, it was cramped in our room, but all was functional and the location was perfect! There was no wifi in the room but it was available at the front desk area. Again, for our purpose which was to have a room to crash after New Year's Eve celebrating, it met our needs.

Rustic conditions but tolerable

It's a dump, I don't even know where to start. Smelly rooms, stains all over, furniture in bad conditions, terrible bed. So much much better nearby for the same price or few couple extra dollars.

And obviously, because of such bad conditions, Hotel only lets you book with no free cancelations.

Horror show!

Despite it's renewed façade and lobby do not get fooled by this hotel.The rooms are terrible.Small and when you go to breakfast,after 10:00 am, dare not ask for more cheese.You'll receive a look that will knock your socks of.A pity because the location is good.Instead go to the two or three hotels nearby.The service of these are much,much better.
I was appalled because Uruguayan people are nice as nice can be.

Soo Poor

From outside the hotel looked something like a shed. At night an illuminated sign up on the roof was turned out so I even hardly could recognize the place in the dark. As from inside the hotel was more or less in good condition. Clean and tidy. Spacious hall beside reception which served as a breakfast room in the morning. Breakfast was good with sufficient choice and meal quality including fresh fruit. However the price was unsatisfactory for me. Extremely expensive, like in Zurich. But actually even this price was one of the cheapest options we could find in Punta in hot season. My room in the hotel was large and clean, with TV, small fridge and comfortable beds.The room door however could not be locked well - very old lock indeed.

Expensive, but good for one night in Punta.

We were basically forced to stay at this hotel as we were in punta for New Years and this was the only accommodation that we could find for a reasonable price. Well actually, it wasn't reasonable it was quite expensive but we couldn't really do much about it. 
The rooms wer nothing special. The bathroom is so small you had to maneuver your way in. The bathroom actually stunk the room out like urine. Overall not that pleasant. 
We got stuck in the elevator so that's not functioning well.
The worst out of everything in my opinion was the service. The staff was always uninterested. Whenever I went to the counter to ask assistance or a question, they all looked like they wer pushing each other to attend to me because they wanted nothing to do with me. Checkin took forever. They obviously don't care much about their visitors. 
Only on the last day were we made aware that there was a rooftop area - something most hotel staff would point out in the first day. 
I was in the lobby once sitting on the couch and the staff turned up the music so loud- I felt I was in a club or something. 
Service with a smile doesn't exist in this hotel - I never saw any of the staff smile once. 
The location is near the end of the peninsula. Walking distance to nice restaurants and bars. 20 minute nice walk to beaches and bus station. 
Overall if possible try to avoid. Otherwise don't set your expectations too high with this hotel
