A friend and I used to come in here most evenings, but having moved away have not been back for some time.

Recently refurbished, and smart enough.

Friendly staff and clientele, will return and see what is offered in the way of food.



Just drinks

Located centraly a couple of minutes walk to the center of the city. Parking is two minutes walk in the opposite direction. The room was very well decorated and laid out. 
It has a seating area outside the window which most people had left by 2000hrs. 

Short stay 

Lovely little pub/hotel.  We stayed in room 3, after asking for the biggest room. We were travelling with 4 others, so got to see the other rooms too.  Lovely big room & huge shower.  Very clean  & nicely presented.  Friendly staff, definitely stay here again if we needed too.  Only 1 small issue, couldn't work out how to use the smaller shower head.. Quite surprised reading negative reviews, no complaints whatsoever here, keep up the good work guys!! 

Great little place..

We knew that breakfast wasn't available with our booking but we didn't realise that this was due to a shortage of staff so they had no evening meals available either. When we asked for an alternative suggestion takeaways seemed to be the only option. This was thankfully only a one night stopover otherwise I think we would have tried to move hotels. Not impressed with the back entrance which lead to an outdoor winding iron staircase to our room. We didn't actually get to see the hotel itself. We often book a room in Wells en-route to Cornwall but this one will be crossed off our list.

Basic for a hotel in town centre

Booked this at we checked out a day early from the God awful Pontins at Brean sands!  A wonderful pub with lots of history, friendly and welcoming staff.  Car parking was in a public car park a short 3 min walk from the Pub.  A real find and somewhere I would return to!  Breakfast is served however this is additional to room rate.

Friendly Pub In Central Location

Had a great stay here. Firstly the staff were amazing and so friendly. The room was perfect and had an en suite and really comfy bed. The location couldn't of been better! Right in the centre of things and just a few mins walk to the high street. Couldn't recommend this place more for a weekend away. Everything was easy breezy. Definitely will be back.

food ,staff,service all good.you cant park but car parks not to far,slight gripe re shower could not  turn heat down but that may be our fault as it wasnt clear how to use other than that all a1.its well located in good position handy for hi st and cathedral.

We popped in here on our way past. You enter the pub via a small courtyard which was full of smokers.

It was a Monday in half term and the pub was quiet and cold. I kept my coat and scarf on.

The welcome wasn't warm and this appears to be a locals pub with a few coming in, in their work gear. This doesn't bother me but just saying this as it assists to be a locals place.

Just had the one and left. 

Average.... Cold.... Uninviting

Found this pub quite by chance. Went to right hand side candlit bar with light music playing and ate a huge ,with all fresh veg and carved roast ,which was very good. All the staff were jolly and helpful. Good selection of beers too .

Sunday roast

The location is in the middle of town with access to all the attractions.

Reception was dreadful. This was at the bar and the member of staff could not answer any questions, notably those concerning parking.  Her more experienced colleague tried to help and gave us the address of a carpark which would have required more driving in narrow and one way streets. As it was, we were parked in a Waitrose carpark and further enquires from Waitrose staff made it clear that it was best to leave it there overnight.

Although the City Arms ran a restaurant, breakfast was not provided. For the price we paid another chain hotel would have thrown in the breakfast as part of the deal and the bed would have been more comfortable. Old pubs like the City Arms have got to up their game if they are to compete with the chains. Two cafes were recommended for breakfast but they had that 'greasy spoon' look. We found a very good café ('21') near the cathedral.

Our twin bedded room was clean but the mattresses were too soft. The basin and shower left much to be desired.  The temperature of the shower was too hot and could not be adjusted.

The restaurant menu did not inspire (the sheer number of dishes were a sign that many of the meals must have been pre- prepared as no chef in a pub could cook them all). We went elsewhere for fresh food cooked from scratch.

Finally, there was no checkout.  We were told to simply leave the keys in the room. Far from being a friendly pub/hotel, this was an impersonal experience.  A couple could do much better for £75 a night than this.
