This was a first stay for us in rye and we chose the Standard Inn inn as it looked charming and was in a very central position to everything.
We are aware that this is a 15th Century Inn, so we were of course, expecting oldy worldy charm, and a cosy stay. Unfortunately, the first issue we encountered was that the whole of Rye had been experiencing some water issues due to problems with Southern water. Whilst this is no fault of the Standard Inn, we would have hoped that they would have contacted guests before they arrived to have informed them of these issues. After a long 3 hour drive, we arrived and still, no mention by the staff of the issues with the water problems. We only found out when we ventured into town, to find the cafes, coffee shops etc were closed. We did pop into the Mermaid inn for a drink and were informed of the water issues by the staff there. We were booked to stay for 3 nights but ended up only staying 1 night. Apart from the fact that we would not have been able to shower/wash anyway, this was not the only issue. The room we had booked, ( The Hastings)  was awful. I accept oldy worldy decor, what I didn’t expect was that the room, was not only very small and although the shower cubicle and toilet was separate there was not much room to manoeuvre even if you did want to or could have showered. Again this was unfortunately not the only issue. To say the room is very tired, is an understatement, on top of this, it was not very clean. (See pics) The tiles in the shower could do with replacing or at the least regrouting, and a new towel radiator installed. (Again see pics) there was nowhere to hang or put clothes apart from a coat hook on the wall, and no chest of drawers. Acceptable perhaps for 1 night but not great if booked for any longer. If I am completely honest, there are more things I could 
add but this review could go on forever. I think the pictures will speak for themselves. We did speak to the stand in manager Theo and he told us that we could have a chat the next morning if the problem with the water was not resolved. He had told us, he would be in at 9am the next day. To my surprise, on going down the next morning, we were told by another member of staff, Amy that he wasn’t coming in as his son was unwell? We explained that we were not prepared to stay without water to shower and the other issues with the room but was initially told that a refund would not be authorised unless we emailed the owner? After some struggle, another staff member Ellen spoke to us and told us that a refund for the other 2 nights would be issued. Whilst this has been the case, we still paid for the one night we stayed even though there was no water but we didnt even want to stay for breakfast, too stressed by this point, no mention of refunding this however. All in all, a very disappointing trip, which we had been looking forward to and left feeling extremely cheated. One thing I would like to say is that Ellen and Amy were very apologetic and it is not their fault but I think things could have been handled a whole lot better overall. I can only hope that the Standard Inn can improve on the cleanliness of the rooms at least and be more proactive in informing guests of any issues before they become more problematic. 

Overwhelmingly disappointing!

We had a lovely stay at this hotel, which is right in the middle of Rye. 

Others have said it was noisy, which it was, but only until about 10:30, so it didn’t interrupt our sleeping at all. 

The closest car park was 2-minutes walk away. 

Staff were all lovely and helpful. Evening meal was good and breakfast was OK. It wasn’t a cheap place, and it seemed a bit mean to be charged extra for an orange juice at breakfast, but that was our only complaint. 

We’d stay again.

Nice stay in a great location.

We enjoyed our one night break staying here, but we don't get away very often and we really liked being in the centre of Rye. We had the large room facing the street, which can be noisy, but we had been told it would go quiet at 11pm .. so we expected it, as they told us it is over the bar, which is very popular. The room had a beamed ceiling and was quite dark with a stand alone bath and "screen " provided! It was all charming and staff were friendly. The room was clean. Evening meal was excellent, even if we could hardly hear ourselves talk as the youngsters at the next table were SO loud.Breakfast in the bar the next morning was superb.

A Weekend in Rye

Firstly I would like to say that we are only giving a " Average" review for The Standard Inn because of the room, it really wasn't worth the money we paid , it was small ( a broom cupboard) very tired, and  shabby , the headboard wasn't even fixed to the bed! and door knobs  falling off and dreadfully makes tops of bed side cabinet's that could be avoided simply by providing a coaster, I actually felt very claustrophobic in there, don't get me wrong I expect quirky with such an old building, but I don't think this room " Sandwich" is fit for purpose, but by coincidence very aptly named ! don't be fooled by the pictures on the website, they certainly didn't match mine ! But on a lighter note The staff are amazing and so friendly and work very hard , Theo on the bar is  a cutie and the lady that served us our breakfast on the first morning was super lovely, I wish I had taken her name ? Couldn't do enough for us, the room was small but the breakfast certainly wasn't, it was amazing., as was our food in the evening, we had the best Rye Lamb I think the best we have ever had, cooked to perfection. Followed by a brilliant cheese board. The member of staff that checked us in and served our last breakfast however would do well  to take some training from other members of the team in customer service , and learn to smile , great team let down slightly by one ! We would 100% go back to the Standard Inn but would need to stay in either The Hythe or New Romney rooms , I'm sure still quirky but more roomy .

Lovely Bed & Breakfast! Wrong room .

We had an unbelievable lunch here. The Rye marsh lamb I had was undoubtedly the best lamb I have ever tasted thick, succukent, juicy. The sticky toffee puddings which all three of us chose were like wise the best ever - moist and swimming in sauce which is how it should be. Thee pub has great character, good beer and we were treated really well. Couldn't ask for more. Would come back any time (pity we live in Lancashire).

Five star........

Staying in Rye for a couple of days, we were so impressed by our first visit here for lunch, we came back later for an evening meal. Great food, and a lovely atmosphere generated in no small part by the excellent staff. There was a good range of choice to suit all tastes, the food was fresh, well prepared, well presented and aboslutely gorgeous.

Great food, a warm welcome and good service

Decor tired, room too small and bathroom a joke. Paid for 2 nights left after one as accommodation was so poor. Radiator not working and it was cold. Felt like we were in a broom cupboard we asked for a change of room but was told no other room and no refund if we decided to not stay for a second night. We Did not expect this room as the website showcases something very different.

Avoid “sandwich room”

Is it my imagination but have the Standard increased their prices whilst decreasing their portion sizes?? I ordered sea-bass and received a tiny piece of fish, spoonful of mashed potato and a little spinach. Definitely did not match the price. Totally understand if you need to increase your prices but please don't leave the customer short changed. We are not stupid!!

Disappointing

Before I go into detail I just want to say that the lamb was well cooked my gripe is with the ingredients in the menu. Firstly, as the plate arrived I was given just what was written on the menu. A potato croquette, singular. I get that but since they were frozen from a packet could you not have give me two? One for each lamb chop? The asparagus was perfectly cooked. The other two ingredients were problematic. 'Pan jus', or 'Au jus', a French concoction created from several ingredients. What I got was just a smear around the plate of the juice the lamb was cooked in. Surely, that should have just been drizzled over the English, locally produced, lamb as you serve it, regardless. The last ingredient, of Italian extraction, 'Mint Grenolata'. I had to check what this consisted of, it should at least contain lemon and garlic. Only once I had enlarged the picture I took of the meal could I see a vague appearance of the zest of a lemon, I certainly did not taste it nor any evidence of garlic.  This was such a lazy recipe bulked out out with two, maybe three, ingredients that surely did not stretch the imagination of the chef. I recently spent two weeks travelling around Sussex and eating a pub lunch most days and while this was well cooked it was certainly not worth the 22 pounds I paid for it and, yes, I really felt cheated!

I felt cheated

Just wanted to say a big thank you for our wonderful visit to your establishment.  The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful . The food is outstanding and nothing was too much trouble. Will be highly recommending your place to our friends and family to book.  The room was clean and quirky  and everything had been thought of including the brochure and map for visiting Rye . Nothing was too much trouble.  Thank you for a memorable stay ❤️
