After accidentally booking the wrong night and turning up at the hotel when they were closed, I was greeted by a very friendly man , who I assume is the owner/manager, who was very understanding of my very silly mistake. After he explained they didn’t open on Sunday I said I understood and went to leave when he went to his book and said he could still help me and allowed me to stay in a single room at standard price.

The following morning I then asked if he could move my accidental booking for Wednesday night back to Monday night. He happily agreed even though on booking.con it was “non refundable or exchangeable”. 

The room was exactly what you would expect, small but well decorated and cosy, with a nice spacious bathroom. Free parking and very quiet at night. Fantastic location.

Incredibly helpful and friendly staff

Top value for the price. 
No frills but warm with a comfortable bed, a good shower and friendly staff. The breakfast was really tasty and unhurried; extra toast no problem. Plus free parking. First time here but if I need to come back to this area I’d definitely stay again.

A good find!

But our first impression was that the room was drab and in need of refurbishment; it was all beginning to look tired and run down.  So at first glance at the room was not encouraging.  Then we realised that there was no wardrobe and really, nowhere to put our empty suitcases either.  We were there for five days/four nights with several changes of clothes and all there was were 8 coat hooks and three or for plastic coat hangers.  The suitcase problem was easily solved by returning our empty cases to our car boot!   Now don’t get me wrong, everything was clean enough it just looked drab.  But the rooms are small.  The en-suite was fine and the shower worked all right and our towels were replaced each day.  We were provided with tea and coffee makings but the kettle was too big to fit under the cold tap so had to be filled by bailing-in water with one of the mugs provided.
On the other hand, the service was good.  A friend in another room had a small problem sorted that day and the breakfasts were good.  Cereals and fruit juice and full cooked breakfast were available with toast and marmalade to follow. Certainly enough to set one up for the day.

When you pay up front you'd expect breakfast food supplies - the only food served in this 'hotel' to be suffcient for all the guests.
Sadly not the case although what is produced is very good and tasty.
That aside the property is in need of a good deal of tlc - accomodation is in a two storey building which is seperate ffrom the original 15th c building which retains a lot of its character but only seen at breakfast.
Rooms are smallish - cleanliness is an issue but bed and bathroom linen is changed daily.

Should be so much better

Very tired but cleanish small rooms.. if your here on a budget you have your own onsuite  but I have had better in Reading Centre for the same price so best of luck.

If your into ghosts its supposed to be haunted...they have seances at the weekend.. I was hoping for a visit from the spirit world to try to find out how to turn the radiators on but was out of luck

Pretty Basic!

I arrived in the middle of the evening on a vey rainy night. Don't follow the post code as this will take you to the library just down the road. 

I rang the door bell as this isn't an open hotel 24/7 ( nor does it claim to be ). I was met by a nice gentleman, who said hello, and that was it, literally. I followed him to the counter and stood there for a moment with my " Im good thank you and how are you? " ready, but the opportunity never came. 

I started with "I would like to book in and my name is Louis" I was handed a sheet of paper and took the initiative that this needs filling in. After this I was given my room key. I politely asked where the car park is, and was told its location round the back along with " if theres any spaces left! " which left me feeling unhopeful. Luckily however for me there was lots, then I asked about breakfast and was told its included and from 07:00-10:00.

The room is basic, small, but clean and exactly what i expected. No complaints from me there. The bathroom was actually surprisingly spacious given the size of the bedroom. The room was dated but original, again what I expected. 

After unpacking I left the hotel and headed down to the road to one of the pubs suggested on the booking site. This was pleasant and served food until 21:00 which was helpful, there is also a small supermarket a short 5 minuet walk down the road in the opposite direction. The village is quaint and tidy, very peaceful.

After this I returned to the room and settled in for the night, the bed is, well a bed, nothing more. It clearly isn't a 5*, feather stuffed mattress from the island of sleep, but it is a bed, but don't expect 5* comfort. 

There is a radiator in the room which had kindly been left on for me, and it has a dial so I could turn it down for the night as it does heat the room up quickly. The hotel seemed relatively busy from the other guests I saw coming and going, however I suffered no noise issues, but I feel the regular clientele here are not the sort to cause a racket being mostly persons on business/work stays.

The next morning after a shower, which is easy to use and hot however the water pressure is not to praised sadly, I arrived at breakfast a minuet or two after 07:00 and was met by a pleasant lady, I couldn't tell if she worked there or a guest at first but a gentle look of confusion in her direction initiated her introduction. 

I was given a choice of seats in the small but cosy breakfast room. The waitress asked me for my order, I hadn't been given nor seen a menu at this point but I took a punt in the dark and assumed a full english would most likely be on the menu and asked for eggs, bacon and beans. The waitress took my order and explained to help myself to any of the fruits/cereals/juices/tea/coffee available on the breakfast table while I waited for my food. 

This arrived within a mere few minuets which was helpful. It was much like the rooms in its size to be honest, and was barely bigger than the saucer for my tea however it tasted good and hit the spot. 

I finished up and asked the waitress if I could leave my key with her to wish she happily obliged. 

Conveniently the parking is opposite the rooms and I was easily able to pack and leave within a matter of minuets to start my day.

All in all this hotel is exactly what you pay for, if not more. Somewhere to sleep, somewhere to eat breakfast and the surrounding amenities will cover anything else you may need. The staff were friendly, but needed prompting, not that I lost any sleep over this. 

Cheap but succeeding.

Does exactly what it says on the tin

I only stayed here one night but the room was clean, tidy it had everything i could want in there. Even had an ensuite. It may only have been small but it did the job perfectly. The gentleman on reception was lovely and helpful. The room felt warm and cosy. Unfortunately I couldn'tstay for breakfast. 

Cosy

In spite of the beautiful old building accommodation was in a block in the car park.  The whole place was extremely unwelcoming from the start.  I had to ring the doorbell to get in and the owner was cold and unfriendly and didn't even bother to show me to my room.  The room was small but adequate and very clean but depressing.  It is not possible to have an evening meal here but there are 4 pubs in the village and I found one with excellent food.  The breakfast, included in the price was very poor.  The dining room and reception stank of old cooking fat which is most unpleasant in the mornings.  The coffee was disgusting, the orange juice watered down and the toast too thin.  I had poached eggs which had the air of being battery eggs or perhaps just not fresh.  The whites were thick and rubbery and the yolks very pale.  I would certainly never stay here again.
