The staff of  The Hatchet Inn can be a bit hit or miss when it comes to service at the bar. The selection of guest ales is always good and, we being there on a Tuesday and it being "steak day", got the special of gammon, jacket potato, peas, tomato, mushroom.... so filling! Plenty of different areas so one can find a seat as quiet or noisy as one wants.  Must be very convenient for the hotel guests above! Is close to the bus station and on the town square so  plenty of foot traffic. The beer garden is large and is wonderful in summer for parties.

Do not take an axe to this Spoons!

Excellent service as always. Best Wetherspoons I’ve visited and I’m somewhat of a connoisseur. Special mention to the gorgeous Emma who noticed that my wine wasn’t that cold and offered a wine bucket without prompting. Really good customer service. Thank you Emma and all of the FoH team

Grape experience

Though unusually disappointed on our last visit the Hatchet has now redeemed itself. We had breakfasts and dinners on our most recent visit and they were amazing. We opted for the £25 special, 2 main meals and 2 sweets. We anticipated small portions but no, they were huge and as per the regular menu but discounted. The (Traditional) Mixed Grill had 4 meats, including Lamb, plus a sausage and the Double Burger, chips and trimmings was a huge plateful. Also some good beers and a stout on offer.

Perfect meal.

i dont know why wetherspoons gets bad press..food was top class..served quickly and polite staff..everything in the all day brunch was cooked to perfection and so was the jacket potato..excellent value too.

Stayed in room 105 which was sold as a double but was not even big enough for a single. There was a wooden fixture in the corner which held a folded ironing board impossible to use because there was no space to errect it. There was an intermittent noise every two minutes throughout the night from an air-conditioning unit. There was a strong smell of mould on the very steep steps coming up to the hotel area from the pub.



Never again.

Disappointed with The Hatchet this time. We are fans of Wetherspoons and have stayed at The Hatchet several times and probably will again. The rooms are excellent as are the breakfasts which we attend even when staying elsewhere. This time we were disappointed with the ales and main meals. Adnams Broadside and Hobgoblin Ruby are 2 of my favourites but they didn't taste right this visit. The main meals were the most disappointing. We were a group of 3 and had;- 
Fish and Chips. The chips, peas and outer edges of the fish were cold.
Steak and Kidney Pudding. Cold and little meat filling.
Marguerita Pizza. Very thin and almost impossible to cut. We managed 2 pieces, too hard to eat, left it.
We often have Wetherspoon mains when we're out and very happy with them. Normally late afternoon rather than early (Friday) evening when very busy.
We would have complained at the time but the bar was heaving with long queues and waiting for replacements would have ruined our later plans.

Regretfully disappointing.

Great location, right in the town centre. Room was large, clean and well equipped. Good value for money.

Downsides:
* No car park so you have to pay for a public one out the back
* It's in a Spoons so you could get locked out at closing time
* Breakfast was not included
* Lots of stairs and no lift

Good value accommodation, not suitable for disabled

Stayed here whilst visiting nearby Highclere Castle. Our room was in the quaint cottage in the beer garden. Room was big and benefitted from Air-Con. Decor was ok but could do with a little bit of a tidy. Was worried about nice from the beer garden but room was completely quiet and we had a great nights sleep. Staff were very friendly and the drinks prices were incredible! Can't remember the last time I bought a pint for less than £2.50! 
Overall great stay for the price. Tip if you are bringing a car: 24 hours parking can be had at the nearby Sainsburys car park for £3 (Booked on JustPark.com)

Great Stay

I had a 4 night stay here, All the Staff were so helpful, nothing was to much trouble as I work long hours and had difficulty with checking in, The Room was beautifully clean and very comfortable..I would highly recommend The Hatchet and definitely stay there again.



High End Quality Very Reasonable Rates!

Room #3  -  1 x Night booked via Agoda
 
We saw the photos on Agoda and thought how wonderful to stay in a English Thatched Inn Pub room.....

WRONG  -  On Agoda all the photos show ONLY the Thatched building and bedroom shots that one can take to suggest are upstairs in the Thatched building.

There were no wordings suggesting that you would not be staying in the main building - THAT IS  VERY DECEIVING in my view.

We were put'out the back in a damp square no personality block of 4 rooms 

The room were COLD and smelt DAMP.

The Landlord at best was 'Stiff' 

Breakfast was great, substantial and OK.

For the money paid we stayed in better Pub Rooms with more atmosphere.

Get those terrible fake and plastic Laevnder and Roses out of the room window sills!!!

We would NOT book and stay here again.

DISAPPOINTED is a word that comes to mind......

We Felt Deceived as You Do NOT get to Stay in the Thatched Building which is Shown on ALL the Photos!!!
