We did not stay here but went for a drink, the pathways from the car park were lethal because of ice! I mentioned this to the bar staff and I was told that they were not allowed to grit or salt the path! I’ve looked online and there is no reason that they could not have made the paths safe for staff and visitors in fact it is their responsibility. Disappointed that visitors are being left to to navigate these treacherous conditions.

Having stayed here twice before for New Year, we booked in again. 
The room was spotless clean, warm & a comfy bed. Lovely hot shower & big fluffy towels.
Tea, coffee etc.
Great menu & excellent meal. 
Tasty breakfast too 😊

New Year 2024 🎉 🥂

Booked in at the hotel for a three night stay between Christmas and New Year. 
The Rooms and beds are small but clean, well decorated and have everything you need. 
The food menu is extensive, very reasonably priced, absolutely first class quality and matched with excellent service. 
Travelling frequently, for a three star hotel, I would match this place against any other three star in the country and highly recommend it for food and or accommodation. Make sure you book!

Everyone so friendly. Room cosy, fresh and clean, all one could need, food excellent and all at such a reasonable price. Car parking adjacent to the rooms. Will look forward to staying again when in area.

Super welcome, super stay

What was advertised as a country hotel is certainly not correct, Best to describe it as a restaurant with rooms as hotel facilities there is definitely a lack of,  nowhere to have a quiet drink or to read a book after being out all day  when I enquired about an area for this  I was told there is a tv in your room,  that may be true but there is only one seat  unless you want to sit on the bed not really suitable if there is two of you, The bar closes at 9 pm most nights and does not open on a Sunday night at all, was told there is a pub up the road if you want a drink or a bite to eat on a Sunday,  Ok but as we are staying in a  "Hotel" we should not have to go out to enjoy these simple things ,  Booking a meal at the " hotel " was a bit of a challenge too,  for example, if they have a group in at 7 pm you can't get a table at that time even although the other tables were empty,   The room we were in was small for a double  more suited to a single room really  , The hangers you see on the wall in the pictures is basicly all you get  to hang your clothes  on and some drawers to put your other bits and bobs in  fine for a couple of days but not for longer stays, 
Make sure you settle your bill each night as you will be challenged before you leave the bar to go to your room as I was even though you are staying longer

The food was excellent with plenty of choice  
The room was also very clean and  was  serviced thoroughly every day including clean towels 
Good location for visiting Weardale and the surrounding area including Barnard Castle

A little gem of a place.rooms are clean,food is delicious and staff are lovely..will definitely stay again..10/10.its ideally situated for either a day out in Durham city or a day out in the dales.lots to see and do.

After booking a fantastic night last year for New Year 21-22, we decided to do it again to see New Year in again for 2023.
Excellent meal, the  food was delicious.
All of the staff are friendly, helpful & couldn’t do enough for us. Nothing is ever a problem.

The room was spotless  clean, comfortable & cozy. Lovely hot shower, Tea, coffee etc…
Breakfast was perfect. 

A great start to 2023 & we definitely recommend 😊

New Year 2023

We were looking for somewhere with good reviews as a reasonably priced stop-off near Durham.

The good - the rooms are nice and clean and were warm enough. The electric heating, cranked up to the max., did the job when the overnight temperature dropped below zero.   The shower was electric. The English breakfast was alright and came with tea aplenty. There were also options for omelettes, eggs benedict and the like.

The bad - there was scuttling and scratching above our room. This was intermittent, but consistent throughout the night. Having belatedly, and too late to influence our stay, read the most recent reviews it appears that this is an ongoing issue. I reported it when we checked out and was told that 'maintenance would be informed'. Fingers crossed.

Overall, it's a decent enough place to stay -  around 20 minutes drive to Durham and in a lovely part of the world.

Some good, some bad.

Cold rooms - draught through the door constantly- awful pillows- either totally flat or lumpy and hard. Noises from water pipes from one chalet to another, walls are quite thin. Breakfast average/ok, staff abrupt. On a positive note the Rooms are clean. Overheard another diner at breakfast complaining to the staff about hearing scuttling and scratching in the night.

Outside chalet style rooms which is quite nice but the bedroom and bathroom were  freezing - the elec radiators had not been turned on prior to check in and it takes a long time for the room to heat up. The walls are thin and you can hear next door in the bathroom and water pipes running above the ceiling. The room was clean. Breakfast had a very small time window for a weekend, the food was average.  Other diners were concerned and reported scratching  through the night to staff - to which they stated they were aware of the problem.
