As a solo female traveller I felt welcome, safe and well cared -for.  A cosy table was found for dinner (which was excellent) and my room was clean, quiet & filled with tiny, thoughtful touches such as fresh coffee bags and lovely shampoos.  Tucked away in the countryside outside Cheltenham, this pub made a welcome and good value change from the usual chain hotels.

Green Dragon - a home from home with superb cooking.

We stayed for two nights in the St Georges Suite, and can honestly say it was the most comfortable, well equipped hotel room we've ever had. Everything is there to make you feel at home, sumptuous bed, comfortable sofas, 60" TV, robes, slippers, fridge with fresh milk and water, everything you could possibly need. And the bathroom! It's bigger than the sitting room in our house. There are loads of movie CDs, and a quirky little library of really interesting books. As a cosy getaway it can't be beaten. The breakfast is excellent, all freshly cooked, and we enjoyed a super Sunday roast. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. Five stars all day long.

A great stop for lunch

We arrived at the check in to be greeted by a super efficient member of the team who asked if we would like dinner in the restaurant, which we hadn't considered but thankfully they had some space for us. The room was clean, cosy and had everything we needed, including an incredibly comfortable bed. I must admit we are particularly picky about the quality of our sleep, but this was just heaven. When we dined in the restaurant at night we both chose burgers that arrived stacked with fresh lettuce, sauce and hot juicy burgers. The service was quick and attentive and the food delicious, as was breakfast the following morning. On talking to the team we understand they have not long taken over The Green Dragon and we would not hesitate to return or recommend a visit, the quality of the room, food and staff is something else. Very happy customer :)

Outstanding Visit and Dining Experience

I’ve had the pleasure of staying at the Green Dragon three times over the last few weeks and Chris Shields and his team have consistently provided an excellent level of service, well appointed rooms and delicious meals. Nothing is too much trouble and it’s been a pleasure to arrive and depart out of hours and always know that we will receive a warm welcome.

Great service, good and rooms

We have been here many times but our latest experience wasn’t great . The inn has a great atmosphere, lovely wood fires , nice friendly staff but I am afraid the food let it down . 
The beef burger was cool , overcooked and tasted like rubber , stacked with over sized onions and old looking tomatoes and lettuce and a very small amount of cheese that you couldn’t taste . The plates were warm . The chips were underdone .. the Fish was too flaky didn’t feel fresh .. not great value for money .

Location, food and staff all were great.  This was a spur of the moment visit that we absolutely enjoyed.  We will be going again.

The shop was also quite a refreshing experience compared to other shops of this ilk.

What a great place

If you're looking for a traditional country pub with a roaring fire and oak beams that serves delicious food then look no further. This place deserves it's fine reputation, the staff are friendly and attentive and the Christmas decs are beautiful. We so enjoyed our lunch of turkey with all the trimmings and the lightest scrumptious Christmas pud.

Christmas lunch

A group of six of us from Cardiff regularly attend meetings at Cheltenham Racecourse . We usually travel up and back in the day but this year we decided to book into The Green Dragon for Saturday night.
We had pre booked breakfast at the Inn to start the day. 
We were warmly welcomed by Nicky , Simon and the staff and enjoyed an extremely hearty breakfast with a comprehensive range of options. 
We can recommend the Full English  the Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Egg and the very excellent Poached Eggs and Smashed Avocado.
This fortified we only had to drive a few miles to the racecourse as the Inn is very conveniently located . 
On our return we were checked very efficiently in by the delightful Serena
who later formed part of the bar and restaurant team that were to serve us   with drinks and dinner. 
Despite the bars and the restaurant being very busy the service at dinner was very friendly and efficient. Menu choices were many and all our selections were delicious. Steak and Kidney Pudding being a particular hit. 
Our rooms were immaculately clean, warm and comfortable. 
It should be said that members of our party are shameless about making “ off menu” choices at breakfast . This was the case this morning but Nicky and her staff dealt with all these foibles without fuss or problem.
We thoroughly recommend the Green Dragon to anyone travelling to this part of the country for any reason. We have already booked to return next year.
(Particular thanks are due to Nicky and the staff for making the stay of one our party very comfortable as he was in the process of recovering from a back injury.)

All Inns Should Be Like This..

This is a wonderful traditional country pub with a large warm fire always on the go, very good selection of beers but most of all friendly staff and superb fresh food.  Would recommend booking a table though as they can be very busy particularly at weekends. For those interested in walking there are also a number of pleasant walks
