The moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome, we were shown to our room which was very nice, coffee and tea facilities provided (with a couple of biscuits always welcome). Our expectations were exceeded, breakfast was serviced in the Royal Oak next day which was outstanding. We stayed for 2 nights didnt spend much time there during the day, but slept like a baby at night. Thank you for a lovely weekend and I would happily return.

Lovely weekend

This was a last minute booking with work and I have to say this is one of the best rooms I've stayed in. The owners are lovely and very friendly, they also manage the pub next door and the facilities are first class. Real luxury. The only issue is the adjacent road is busy and you can hear the passing vehicles, but that didn't ruin my stay. Breakfast is provided - tea, coffee, cereals, yoghurt, juice in a mini fridge in the room and food can be purchased from the rather nice local pub next door. Ample parking is available. If you find yourself in this neck of the woods and need accommodation I'm sure you'd be as impressed as I was.

I can't rate this highly enough

Agree with everything that first reviewer says except the bathroom was worse - the shower sprayed everywhere so the floor was awash. The breakfast was a joke. There was an already opened carton of orange juice in the fridge, as well as an unopened. There were two slices of white bread for two of us (plus cereal, to be fair, but what if we didn't eat cereal?) The yoghourt was not replaced. In fact, over three nights I suspect nothing was checked. The shared kitchen cupboards were dirty and a complete jumble of utensils, old food and other stuff which I did not want to look at too closely. The room itself was comfortable and clean but no view (as promised) - just the blank white wall and messy yard. The owner needs to get a grip and change the name to reflect what this offering is - 'self-catering rooms (there were three that I saw) with shared kitchen, next to a noisy road up a dirty track'. It's a pity as the building fits into the environment and is well designed within the limits of the plot of land. But it is NOT The Gardeners Cottage we were anticipating with full English breakfast.

Expectations were not met

My wife and I wanted to go to Rutland Water for a few days break.  However when we looked at the prices of bed and breakfasts or hotels within the boundaries of Rutland itself we found that they were far more expensive than just outside of the smallest county in England.
So we decided to look on the Peterborough side at small villages.  We found Duddingston just off the A48.  We just drove along the High Street of this charming village looking for a gardeners cottage adjacent to the Royal Oak pub.  When we first saw it, we were surprised.  The lane to reach it was up the side of the public house and this lane was parallel with the A 48 which had roaring traffic going by.
What was most interesting , however, was that the name of it makes you feel that you’re going to be sheltering within a sweet little Gardener’s Cottage all alone with your loved one.  How romantic!  But the fact is that although there may well have been a cottage there sometime ago there is not now.  It is a block of apartments.  It didn’t give a good impression when the lock into the place started swivelling round.  Two disdainful stone greyhounds guarded the entrance.  There were very dangerous broken pieces of slab in front of the entrance door.  One could easily trip over them in the dark.  Paint was chipped.
The place wasn’t full.  We chose to go down into the depths underneath via a very steep stone stair.  We found a communal kitchen area, with pots and pans.  Off of this were 3 rooms.  Our room looked out onto a white stone wall across a very narrow paved area with 2 lonely yellow chairs upon it.  The double glazed window kept out any sound of traffic and the warm curtains were of a slightly different colour than the rich red silk flowered eiderdown on the soft bed.  It was a large room with a walk-in dressing area.  There was a small fridge and one armchair.
The owner, who met us with some fresh coffee was keen to show us how to turn the heating down..  We were both disappointed with the bathroom.  One had to step over into the bath to get a shower, which fortunately was a very powerful one.  Why there was a rusty toilet roll holder when the place had been refurbished I don’t know.  The owner offered a foot stall however, but there was no grab rail for any disabled person.  Everything was clean and  modern.
Behind the bed was a full wall of decorative copper coloured ferns on wallpaper in rich brown.  The other walls were plain, but everything gave a feeling of not being executed with a common style.  Nothing was unclean but it was all a little shabby.
We were provided with a jug of milk, some frui, t a few packets of cereal and this was not renewed until late on the 2nd day.  There was no response to our request to have the toilet checked..  Eventually we got it unblocked ourselves.
We do not think that we would stay there again, although it was relatively inexpensive compared with many other places in the area.  The danger is that if one cuts prices, has no proper servicing, the maintenance tends to drop off, but people still look for the value in what they have paid for.  Payment is in advance.


NOT A GARDENER'S COTTAGE-but AN ADEQUATE SET OF APARTMENTS

We booked this very last minute as needed a break away from it all and it was close to where I work. The room was huge, with an equally large en-suite that had an amazing spa bath.  The breakfast was a great idea, it’s all in your fridge ready for the following morning so you can help yourself whenever you want. The close proximity to the pub/restaurant next door was also very handy!
We are hoping to return again very soon. The owners were welcoming and very nice. Definitely recommend.
