We arrived in Malatya after a nine-hour drive from Kars. We couldn't find any of the hotels mentioned in our guides (Malatya isn't big on street signs). We found ourselves in front of the Asilzade and decided to give it a try. 

The owner speaks a little English and offered us a big suite for 150 TL which was ideal for us. Rooms are large and clean, decor a bit erratic but everything works. Good breakfast on the huge roof terrace with its outdoor sitting room.

The owner was extremely helpful and gave us every assistance. This hotel is on the other side of the central boulevard from the other hotels around the central mosque - the area is central but quiet.

A pleasant discovery

The Asilzade is excellent – rooms are huge and very clean. It’s right opposite the much dearer Hotel Palacio and I arrived at midnight without prior reservation as all other hotels were full nearby due to the Turkish election. I was charged 60 LE for one person in a quad room which was incredibly spacious, clean and brightly decorated. The bathroom was very good, and the shower was very hot and strong (let it run for five minutes to get hot). There’s free wi-fi throughout the hotel and the satellite TV in-room (it has English channels like Al Jazeera English and NHK World) was handy. Bed was comfortable and the pillows were excellent (really!!). I stayed in room 404 where the air-con didn’t work but plenty of windows to open at night, whilst there’s a ton of sunlight during the day. The door lock is a little weird but I put a chair next to it just in case. Staff speak no English though the current owner speaks a little Arabic, whilst its future new owner speaks some English (she was hanging around at reception late at night)

Breakfast was ok at the rooftop restaurant but otherwise, location is excellent and it’s a very decent choice for a short-stay in Malatya. The dolmuses for the otogar (bus station) stops right outside the hotel, and it’s only a 10 minutes walk to the main square and market in Malatya. For Battlegazi, it’s also a ten-minute walk along the highway for the dolmus stop.
