I arrived late in the hostel and found it fully empty. There was even anybody in the reception. Tried to call someone and no reply. Had to wait for another 2 hours and with the help of hotels.com customer service, someone arrived. So definetelly, the security needs to be improved in this hostel. Everything else is good, rooms are basic but comfortable. I stayed in double room and it has mosquito net and fan, the bed is very spacious and comfortable.

Review

The bedrooms are not expensive, and are nice for the price. It is a good place for a night or two in Moshi. Bedrooms have mosquito net and fan.
Bathroom are shared, and we had some issue with the cleanliness with one of the bathroom.
The breakfast is really good, do not hesitate to ask for more food if there are any when you arrived, the cook add food when people ask (buffet).

Good hotel for a night or two in Moshi

This is a good place to stay if you are looking for a good location and a good price. They have breakfast, wifi, shared bathrooms and a luggage room. I paid 7 usd for my own room, which is pretty good. The single rooms are small, but with a fan and some space on the floor for the luggage it was good enough for me.

Solo trip

If you’re looking for a short term stay, it would be a good choice as the place is located near many restaurants and it’s overall quite nice.

A few things to note, we were there on low season, only us and maybe two other guests during our 4 day stay. There’s only one bath room and one shower room in the two floors which I don’t think it would be ample if the hostel was filled.

The breakfast is very basic and they did a good job in controlling quantity, as to not waste any food. But in the other hand it may seem a bit small. Either way, you can reflect it to the hostel and ask extra if it’s not enough.

The bathrooms at most times were filled with mosquitoes. Hope the management can install some mosquito lights to kill them and there can be quite a few.

The place is rather quiet away from the main road noise, but the cleaning schedules are quite early 6am or so, and if you don’t close your windows you’d definitely be woken up by it.


Convenient location, nice and clean rooms

I really enjoyed my stay at Kilimanjaro Grand Hostel. The private rooms were good and the location (middle of Moshi) was great and convenient. The security seemed to be pretty good. (friends had bags stolen from a near by hostel- but this one had no incidents that I heard about while I was there) 

The food and laundry service was good. 
The phone number listed on Booking.com didn't work- and it was hard to contact the hotel after arriving at JRO, but after all- This is life in Tanzania. 



Amazing (For a Hostel) 

I think this should only be listed as hostel, and at that, budget level. The rooms are extremely small, only have a fan, shared bathrooms are of low quality. Breakfast was highly lacking in appearance & substance. Therefore I didnt even eat it, but it looked bad. 

Basic & Average

It is very central in Moshi. The dorm are basic and clean. There is a rooftopterrace and a smal sitting area. Peter from the reception is very helpfull and professional. Dormroom is just 6$. Its also a good place for meeting other travelers.

Good Place 

Mandela, the owner, is the best. When you come, take time to get to know him. He is always available to answer your questions, help you out, and joke around.  The price is lower than you'll find other places in the area.  The rooms are comfortable.  Wifi works, breakfast is lovely, grounds are pretty. Not to mention by staying here you are also contributing to the owner's non-profit that is helping support street kids through education sponsorship in the area. Mandela also organizes great day trips as well as hikes up Kilimanjaro. This is worth mentioning as some places will really rip you off by going through third parties charging you more than necessary.  He's the real deal and will help you out! I wouldn't stay anywhere else if I ever return!

Wouldn't Stay anywhere else in Moshi!

The backpackers place is exactly what I expected from a backpackers place - no frills but comfortable. Breakfast was good and the room, although very small, was comfortable. I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone who wants a more luxurious stay, but for a night or two, it's perfect for someone travelling on a budget. The staff were friendly and spoke excellent English, and the security guard was lovely. It's conveniently placed for town. If it takes your fancy, there's also restaurants around the corner which serve Western food like pizzas. Otherwise there's plenty of other local eateries around.
