The hostel itself is cheap and very clean. But Nilaveli is absolutely not recommendable. It's boring, there's nothing despite the diving center and one expensive and bad restaurant. Furthermore we totally agree to lm7892015's comment on the manager: He makes you feel like you shouldn't be there.
But if you don't really care about a friendly atmosphere and enjoy a quiet beach on your own, then it's the place to go!

Good hostel in a boring area

Girlfriend and I spent four days at the hostel where we also took our OWD. The staff is really helpful, 100 meters to the beach, great wifi, a okay kitchen, cheap rooms - unfortunately the walls aren't connected to the ceiling so it kind of feels like a stall, for some people this might be a problem because you can hear everything... toilet and the people next door. 



Cheap, close to the beach and great diving instructors 

We stayed here for one night, it was very cheap at 1800rupees. However it is quite far from Trinco, you have to get a tuk tuk and they are not about in the area. You have to pay to use the fridge/pans/cooker costing roughly 4euros per day. The owner was more welcoming than expected, however there are a list of rules, which felt a bit unnecessary but I suspect some visitors are challenging! 

The hostel itself is an interesting converted warehouse, which was very clean and had a fantastic shower! The mosquito nets are far too small for the beds and we woke up a few times tangled in them.

The beach near by is beautiful but no tourists and some litter- there are also random cows and goats running around the beach. We preferred the beach nearer Trinco at Fernando's/Aqua hotel.

We didn't ask about wifi so not sure if they had it or if it was good.

Overall, it was fine for one night! 

Just OK

Interesting place... We stayed for 3 nights and the whole place is spotless and you can use the cooking facilities for free.  However, we booked a triple room which was unavailable when we arrived.  On the first night, the manager kindly let one of us sleep in another room.  However, on the 2nd night, he locked the other room and left the premises so 3 of us had to sleep in 2 single beds pushed together with 1 mosquito net.  The manager refused to apologise the morning after despite us being covered in mosquito bites.  He was fairly rude to us the majority of our stay and made us feel very unwelcome. This place is really close to the beach however and aside from some irritating dogs outside the premises,  is a good location.  Advice: stay in Uppuveli

Manager made us feel like we shouldn't be there

Stayed for 3 nights at nilaveli beach hostel. I had an overall positive experience. And would like to share the pros and cons: 

Pros: great location for beach goers.100m from the ocean. 
Helpful and friendly staff.
Clean and oganized kitchen. 
Free drinking water. 
Great wifi.
Cool room with 2 powerful fans.
Confortable beds.
Good showers.

Cons: location is a bit far ffrom any local eateries. Tuk-tuk drive or 30min walk.
The rooms have little to no real privacy, the owners of this property simply took a small warehouse and used the cheapest wood to creat a divider in the warehouse to creat 2 seprate rooms. The issue here is, they didnt build it tall enough so the light from the other room comes over to your room and u are at the mercy of your neighbor to turn it off so u can go to bed. There is no privacy when it comes to noise. You can here the person in the other room snore, clean, etc. overall its poorly built rooms.

I would reccomend this hostel for 1 night just because its proximity to the beach. Other than that... Move along.
