I loved this place. A great place to recharge. Lalana looked after everybody so well from the freshly cooked breakfast to everything else she can possibly do for you. Not the newest or smartest of buildings but, for me, much more important was the little bit of authentic Sri Lanka and the peace and quiet just far enough away from the manic main drag of the beachfront.

Authentic, homely experience

I spent Christmas here and was welcomed into the great little hostel. We had xmas dinner with another hostel across the road which was well prepared by the local families. Great memories from here I would definitely recommend ..

Came to this place alone right before New Years and left with a bunch of long time friends. Already had one visit me in Korea and heading to India soon to see another. 

The hostel is beyond basic. If you want to spend most of your time hanging out or at the beach it's fine. Mama is super friendly. Breakfasts are great and group dinners are cheap and lively. Beach is a 5 minute walk down to the main road and there is an awesome juice spot on the way. Beware though the service is SUPER SLOW for groups. 

The main bathroom isn't too great as its an old building and I'm sure hard to keep super clean. But there is another bathroom in "Mama's apartment" that is nice and new so just ask to use that one.

There is a common fridge which was nice as all of use got stuff at the shops to bring back and spend time on the patio. There was however an ex-pat, older British guy who was living in Hikka for quite a while a few blocks away and would come hang out and bum drinks and food off of people. He would take beers out of the fridge pretending he'd replace them and one night even crashed on the couch after Mama had gone to bed. Other than him everyone was cool, but like I said - only basics.

Good for Solo travelers!

Very good value at 900 rupees (incl. plain breakfast) - you live close, so I met good people. Mama is nice with her limited English. Not right on the beach, but within acceptable walking distance. Local shop sells coconuts for 70 rupees :) Not lockers for everyone

Social and good value

I booked this place online for myself and two friends. When we arrived they said there was no space and had been overbooked. I am glad they were as the place seemed pretty dirty and far from the beach area. We walked to the main beach road and found a much better place to stay.
