Over-priced and disappointing but excellent location
Review of Cadjan Sacred

We returned here after three years because we had enjoyed this unusual venue the first time around. Even then it required considerable attention. Quaintness is one thing, decrepitude quite another. We were warmly welcomed by the caretaker and his assistant and they provided food services that were tasty but not sophisticated in any way; that's perfectly fine. Breakfasts were good. Bed tea was available. The coconut estate surrounding the property is spacious and beautiful and gives the house a special mood. It's located in the Sacred City close to the oldest temple there. It could be a little gem of a place, but is spoiled by the complete lack of maintenance and repairs. My room's bathroom door still didn't open easily, as 3 years ago, the sink tap was inadequate, the paintwork was everywhere very dirty and tired...Information about the city was sparse and old and poor, the rooms not tidied in the morning, one room musty and smelly. This would all have been fine, but for the absolutely outrageous price charged. Next day I stayed in another touristic town in a small guest house, in immaculate condition, where the price was less for HB. But the location is great and adds to the very special feelings one gets visiting this ancient, so ancient, city.

A potentially quaint place, but neglected and greatly over-priced

Two of us found this extraordinary old house at the last minute and were delighted, staying three nights and being very well looked after by Nanda and her brother.  Breakfasts were extensive and delicious and 'local'.  The one dinner we had was a superb rice and curry meal.  This traditional upper-class family house had been maintained to a good standard with out being excessively modernised. In fact it appeared from the outside to be somewhat ramshackle, but the overgrown garden, full of beautiful trees, birds and animals, added to its attractiveness for us.  The room was fine, the four-poster bed spacious, the bathroom OK, but neither were luxurious.  The entrance porch doubles as a very nice sitting area, with more sofas inside for when the mosquitoes started their evening feasting.  There are only two rooms here.  It was a lovely centre from which to explore the extensive Ancient City.  We had our own car, but it seemed that bicycles were available at the property.  We'll be back; it was a lovely place to be.

An excellent surprise find in the heart of the Sacred City

We chose to stay at Cadjan Sacred Anuradhapura because this two bed-roomed house which has been in the owner's family for years, is located within the Sacred City and the temples and ruins were within very easy reach. The Thuparamaya, the very first Buddhist temple built in the country was at the top of the road and it was a wonderful experience to go there at night after dinner with our three young granddaughters to walk around the temple by moonlight and light incense sticks.

Because the ancient sites were so easily accessible from the house, we were able to retire there, hot and dusty, when the girls were" templed-out " and they would happily plunge into the cold waters of the small swimming pool to cool off. Later when the sun was going down, we could sally forth again and take in a few more sites. We stayed 3 nights which gave us a chance to explore the ancient city in a leisurely fashion and also spend a morning at nearby Mihintale and the Kaludiya Pokuna complex.

The house itself has a vintage feel and the bathrooms attached to the bedrooms, 
 though renovated are basic, but this is part of the charm of staying in a old-fashioned bungalow. It is clean and well kept, by Nanda and her brother, and the bedrooms have air-conditioning and the large four-poster beds are comfortable. There are sofas to sprawl on in the living room and chairs on the verandah, where you can read (no wifi) surrounded by the sound of crickets and birds in the trees in the large garden in which the house is set.

Nanda and her brother Gunapala were very hospitable and accommodating, willing to adjust menus and times of meals to suit the children.I would really recommend this place for families visiting the ancient city with children.

Only stayed for one night here but it was a great stay. Well looked after by Nanda and her brother and brother-in-law. Gorgeous setting which we would have loved more time to enjoy. Arrived on poya day, so found the town full of pilgrims...an amazing experience. Really appreciated the use of the free bicycles which we used that evening and the next morning to visit most of the sites. Had a lovely evening meal and great breakfast. It was maybe a little more expensive than other properties we stayed in considering amenities etc. bathroom facilities are not fancy and there is no wifi, but for us this was not a problem at all. We were wanting to experience somewhere traditional and this charming home certainly fitted the bill.

Tranquil retreat

Staying here is like stepping back in time. Yes, it could do with a lick of paint but it is clean and comfortable. The bed was really good and there is a cold plunge pool which is very welcome after a day exploring the ruins (which a all within easy walking distance). It is very tranquil  and tea on the veranda in the afternoon watching the rose-ringed parakeets was wonderful. No Wi-Fi but that was ok for a few days. We were so well looked after by Nanda and her brother and the food was the best we’ve had and came in vast quantities. If you like simple clean surroundings we highly recommend 

Charming colonial style bungalow

This was an amazing place to stay, right in the sacred city! It is a renovated wallawa  and has been tastefully decorated. It was fabulous having access to a bicycle as this was the best way to get around. In one full afternoon I was able to visit just about all of the historic sites. Dinner was also a wonderful Sri Lankan feast! I had to leave on the early train back to Colombo and Malini also packed a breakfast for me and Ajit, the owner, arranged for a tuktuk to take me to the train station. 

Best location for sightseeing at Anuradhapura!

This was the first place we stayed on our first trip to Sri Lanka and we were given a wonderful, and informative, welcome by the owner, Adjit. The rooms are comfortable, and the house is pretty, authentic and beautifully set amidst exotic vegetation, with lots of unfamiliar animals and their noises. The food is exceptional...in particular, the incredible breakfast feast!  Adjit gave us so much information about Sri Lanka that we regretted not using his other properties too...another time, we hope!  All in all, an exceptional experience!
