Uros Mamá Kota Lodge

Carlos and his son picked us up from a small port and took us to his small floating island he shares with his family and sister/brother in law. He speaks very good English, and was exceptional at telling us about the Uros culture, how to build the islands, and took us for a tour around the community. He even rowed us for a short ride in his homemade reed boat! Solar panels provide electricity at night, and Carlos is working on making improvements to some of his rooms; ie. adding showers, etc. There was a composting toilet and sink in our room. His wife made an excellent trout dinner and we were provided with Coca tea and hot water bottles for our beds at night (they really do keep their warmth all night!). Overall, this was a great experience for our family. We really enjoyed the "homestay" and more personalized tours/accommodations. The stars are amazingly bright at night, but it does get cold so bring layers! We also had some trouble with the altitude here, so be aware of how high the lake is.
