-Mamak restaurant is downstairs.
-Shared bathroom(but less hygiene).
-Room with fan, small rack,no towel. 
-Located at the upper level, no elevator-use stairs.
-Iron, muslim prayer mat available.
-Deposit required (RM50) for key. 
-No walk in - make reservation / communicate through comm. at the door. 
-Better price when book through Agoda. 

Cheap Backpackers Stay

Staying here was an unexpected back up plan. My original hotel did the dirty and bumped me for someone paying cash (Abode, U.S.$5 gift voucher and you will pass it on to higher management? Please, don't spare the massive effort). On the bus up from Singapore, a Friday no less so very busy in Melaka with over 80% of rooms booked, so I did what all good travellers do. I panicked! Booked the first one on the list and here I am. 

So the good: location is great on the river, the owner is really friendly (though prone to the odd absence so make yourself comfortable with the Bangladeshis next door and watch some football or cricket with them) and most of all it's the cheapest place in town.  Actually the restaurant next door was great, don't expect alacarte but nasi goreng and a drink for RM9 is awesome. 
 
The average: 4 flights of stairs was a little haul with the luggage and the fan only room got sun all afternoon so I felt like a rotisserie chicken the first night. Internet seems to have upload massively throttled back (thanks vloggers) so photos to Facebook was a chore, video was impossible.  The 2 inch foam mattress, not a winner. I was alone in a twin so used both mattreses on night 2 for some improvement. 

The ugly: you can't avoid it, the toilet and bathrooms. Sounds like some improvement since April, 2 sit down toilets in the showers, but that's where it ends. It was the centimetre deep layer of hair I had to scrape off the drain that got me, clearly these are not cleaned each day and he could massively improve his business just in this one area. Paint and remove the mould,  clean daily and inspect twice daily!

A very rough diamond, but enough redeeming qualities

I booked for 1 night,  and when I come,  there is no receptionist Inside, so I need to wait for 2 hours to check  in.  And the room is dirty and only 1 fan Inside. Its near to jonker st and the wifi connection is good. But the toilet is dirty and all of room in 4th fl..  

Dont want to come back

Good for a night stay. Value for money. Rooms are with view of the river. The river kinda smells though. Double room we stayed in has nice big windows.  Shared bathroom with other guest. Only 2 toilets, one of which has the shower. Lavatory is outside for common use.

Affordable

This was our last option because we arrived around 10:30pm at night on a Wednesday and all the other hostels were closed (we don't have international calling to call a receptionist). 
The guy seemed nice enough and he charged us 40 ringgits for a non AC two twin bed room the size of a closet. We asked if that was the cheapest he had and he said it was. Imagine our surprise when we looked online and saw that there are dormitories for 10 Ringgits?! And according to Agoda, we didn't pay the right price for the twin room either (should be US$8). 
That aside, the place was absolutely disgusting. The one toilet would spray water all over the floor when you flushed it and the shower had mold everywhere. You weren't suppose to wear shoes inside but I would not go anywhere without my shower shoes. Also, no blankets are provided for the bed. If we would have paid the 10 ringgits per person then this wouldn't have been a big deal, but since we were charged a "late night fee" (I suppose) it is a big deal. 

Please go to Ringos (right down the street)! A great stay for 17 ringgits per person and they have breakfast :)
