I have traveled to Nakuru on several occasions in the past few years but this is the first time that I have stayed in the Cathay Hotel.  It was a two week stay.  The staff were always very friendly and helpful.  The location is great and it is in a quiet neighborhood.  The room was slightly outdated but was very acceptable and very clean.  I give it a below average rating based upon value.  It is very overpriced.  One can stay at a similar hotel at a much reduced price.  I expected more for the price.  For example, the television was an old cathode ray tube set and not a flat screen tv.  In addition, there were only three local tv channels and the reception was very bad.  No BBC or CNN or anything with an international viewpoint.  I tried the tv twice in the two weeks and turned it off after only a few minutes, very disappointing.  The WiFi did not reach my room and I either had to go out in the hallway or down to the lobby.  I will definitely not stay here on a future trip.

A puzzle: good hotel but bad price

I was dropping in for a swim in the pool, and a lunch. The place was much more exclusive than expected. Nice medium pool, nice changing, toilet and shower rooms. Price for a swim was high 500kch, normal in area 300, but at least you got a towel,

Beer was 250kch, normal 200 kch. But food was excellent, big plate of italian penne with cheese for 500kch, was very much value for money.

The waitress was also excellent. Totally very good experience.

Lunch by the pool

This is not the newest or best hotel, but the staff more than make up for it.  Our group was here to work for 2 weeks and the staff did everything to make this a positive experience.  The morning breakfast buffet is more than satisfactory.  We also had a buffet prepared just for our group each night and we could select the menu.  The soups were delicious, the samosas excellent, and the fish was prepared very well.  There was a large menu.  There is a poolside bar area, coffee bar (great service!) and excellent security was provided.  Rooms have mosquito netting, are small but reasonable and service was fine.

Excellent staff

I spent three weeks at the Hotel Cathay for a large international event and from the moment we arrived, the staff were absolutely wonderful, they couldn't do enough to ensure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable.  Alfred, the manager was always on hand to ensure we were being looked after and I must mention the staff at reception, nothing was a problem - in particular Judy, she always had a smile for us!  The rooms are large and spacious with their own balcony, the pool area is always very clean and very relaxing. Also, the security at the hotel is excellent.   Thank you Hotel Cathay for a very memorable stay

Wonderful experience

I checked into the hotel, had a friend who was with me at the time. We wanted to drink whiskey in the balcony at midday as we have a private chat. My friend was not to stay overnight. I checked in as the sole individual. My friend was refused entry. I asked for a refund since I had not left the reception. I was told to speak to the customer relations manager who was very unhelpful. I ended up paying to fork more money for my friend to join me in the room. The receptionist and cashier have no clue of any customer service. the breakfast was terrible. the hotel is old and need refurbishment. towels disgusting. holes in the mosquito nets. there is a mouldy smell in the corridors ansd the rooms. I will never return and i advise you to keep off.
