The room was clean and had a kettle and mugs.  The hot water varied from very hot to cold when I had a shower and the towels were so thin that you could not dry yourself properly.  having said that the owner was very helpful and had things written in English because he did not speak much.  It was pouring when we left and he very kindly offered to drive us to the airport.

Clean, good Japanese breakfast, very basic

This place is on top of the hill. It was a short drive from the Miyanoura port. Parking is free. The verandah overlooks a field and you can enjoy the fireworks display during the natsumatsuri. There was no lift to the second floor making it a chore to carry heavy luggage up the stairs. Rooms were tired looking and needs an upgrade. It had a musty smell upon arrival. Toilet was clean and pretty new. The owner was quite helpful with information and was quite detailed with directions. I do not think he speaks English, though. There is no fridge in the room but there is a communal fridge on the ground floor.  The price is very steep for what it is. However, for the location and the helpful tips from the owner, I would still recommend this place.

A little old and expensive

This family pension is clean and the rooms are 'OK', however, very simple layout. The owner is trying to be helpful, but is not very flexible. Hence, I wasted 1/2 day and a possible other visit on the island! If you are not arriving at a certain time, you won't find anybody at reception. Breakfast was OK and included in the room rate. For the total price I paid, I had much better accommodations in Japan during this trip. Overall not a real 'success'.

This 'pension' is too expensive for what it is -

stayed here during I was in Yakushima. owner was very kind. room was clean and price was affordable. I rented a car.
I could order lunch box for next day. enjoyed drinking beer outside with my friend. rooms were full but was very quiet. recommended. 

去年のお盆に利用

スタッフは親切だし、ベランダから見える景色もとてもいいです。また、夕食は美味しかったです。
ただし、ベッドが非常に硬くて、毎晩よく寝れませんでした。登山や水泳の後気持ちよく寝たかったですが、全くできまでんでした。まくらも小さくて薄く、毎朝起きたら首がとても痛かったです。
そして、壁が薄くて他の客の声や動きが聞こえることもありました。
ベッドと枕の問題がなかったら勧められると思いますが、登山や長く歩く人には気持ちの良いベッドは不可欠だと思います。

The staff were really friendly and the view from the balcony is very nice. Also, the dinner was excellent. 

However, the beds are extremely hard and very uncomfortable! I stayed for 4 nights and every night I couldn't sleep well. I woke up many times during the night, and on the final morning I woke up with terrible neck pain that I still have. 
The pillow is also very small and thin and provides no support. 

Also, the walls are very thin and I could often hear the other guests talking and moving. 

I think that if the beds and pillows had been better, I could have given it a better score, but for people who climb mountains or swim all day, a comfortable bed is really indispensable.

ベッドは非常に硬い！！！

The staff were so sweet and thoughtful.  The owner drove us to the port for our ferry and many good suggestions for food and things to see, also providing local maps and access to scooter hire and info on bus passes.  Their traditional homestyle breakfast was ample and nourishing.  The owner also organized a viewing of the Tanegashima rocket launch from the patio and provided access to bento boxes for our day trips.  They were very kind!

Some advice for non-Japanese visitors: The staff's English is a bit limited so be prepared to bridge the gap a little bit and do your best with any little Japanese you can muster.  They did their very best to speak with us and help us, though.  Also, they made a lovely breakfast for us but it would be a big help if they offered dinner, as well, even at an extra cost.  Many of the local eateries are not very close by and they stop serving food promptly at 9pm, making it difficult to get back to the Pension after a day trip and still get to food (buses can be precisely timed but sporadic in the evening).  The lady at the Pension is a lovely cook and we would have happily paid extra for a dinner if offered.
