Fantastic stay.  Would highly recommend.  We asked for vegetarian meals and it did not disappoint.  Room was very large and garden was beautiful.  Staff were very welcoming.  Really pleased and would definitely stay again.


Great stay

Our first visit to Kinosaki Japan on 3 November 2019 was one of the most memorable one that i did by far when it comes to onsen town. This little onsen town is rustic yet vibrant, is traditional yet allows travelers who bear tattoos to enter the onsens. 

In the day, the streets are busy with tourists exploring the eateries and shops of their offering; by night the town is transformed with tourists donning the yukatas, visiting all the onsens that the town is so famous for. 

We stayed in a local ryokan - Mikiya. I will highly recommend for anyone who visit Kinosaki to stay in this ryokan. The staff are very friendly, very attentive to all your needs. We booked a room with breakfast & dinner; the food was remarkable both in taste and presentation ( I won’t say much but you can just refer to my pictures and that can describe all). The room is spacious, comfortable and very well maintained. The view is gorgeous. As they have very limited rooms so please book in advance. 

I want to specially thank Sarah, Daisuke, Yuki and everyone in Mikiya a huge thank you for the wonderful hospitality that made this trip so memorable for us - we will definitely visit again! See you all soon!!! 😍


Best Ryokan - Kinosaki Mikiya

We've stayed in many ryokans over the years of visiting Japan, from mid range to luxurious ones. Not many make an impression like Mikiya did. Absolute stunner the moment you walk in, with a beautiful zen garden. There's a small shop selling pottery and ceramics from kilns in the area. I went home with a few items.

Our room was spacious and had a great view to the garden. The inn must have underwent a renovation recently because our room was in tip top condition and well appointed. Most ryokans, even luxurious ones, show some age in the rooms but this was spotless.

Meals were great. We had one of our best ryokan meals of our 16 days trip - a light but umami hotpot of seasonal crab which we finished to the last drop. 

Onsen was clean and enjoyable. The public onsens are good for the experience, but the ones in the ryokan allows a relaxed pace without the jostling for space. The only miss would be the private onsen. We went in to check it out but it had a musty smell, and looked older than the other parts of the hotel. 

It's certainly not the cheapest accommodation around, but for what you get it's great value. Very recommended. We regretted staying just one night.

One of the best ryokan I've ever stayed in

We like to stay in a ryokan at least for a night  whenever we travel to Japan.

 This time we had the chance to stay at 2 ryokans while traveling in kinosaki Onsen. Mikiya is certainly one of the best ones we have been to. The moment you step inside the hospitality and warm personality of the staff just warms u up. It is traditional but modern in a sense. There is a moderinish lobby where u can look to a calm Japanese garden and its equipped with a modern coffee machine where u can enjoy a nice book or just the view. 

The room we stayed in was large and had a separate dressing area. The futons were one of the comfiest ever. The gender separted baths were modern and well equipped. I think they were recently renovated. We love it. There is also a family private bath which was older but served its purpose as well. 

Meals were served in the dining room and each group of guests had their own private section. The futons were made up while u are having dinner. Dinner was simple sublime. We had the best crab here. Breakfast was good too.

I guess u can be traditional yet modern and I think mikiya manages that really well. It isn't a place where you feel very worried about breaking this custom and that like how some ryokans make u feel. It combines the traditional aspects of a ryokan where tourists come to experience yet delivers an experience a modern small luxury hotel can deliver.

One of the best we have been to 

Our family of 4, including 2 children (13 and 7) stayed in a suite at Mikiya in early July for 2 nights. We could not have asked for a better experience. The inn is just lovely with so many nice touches.  We were greeted by Risa-san in the lounge area and served tea while everything was explained to us.  We then picked out our yukatas and were shown how wear them. Then we were shown to our suite which was just perfection. Sitting room with low table connected to the bedroom (with raised beds) by an "engawa" verandah with floor to ceiling windows out onto the gorgeous garden. A second parallel corridor connected the rooms and a bathroom with toilet and sink on the other side.  We parents slept in the bedroom and the children slept on futons (laid out while we ate dinner) in the living room. Each room had its own AC unit and control. I loved to sit by the windows in the engawa and just take in the garden. 

The ryokan's facilities are top notch. The two main baths at the ryokan have been renovated and are really nice.  The family/private bath is the last to be renovated and could use a refresh. The meals were just breathtaking. The kaiseki dinners were had abut 10 courses that were beautifully presented.  It was not crab season but we enjoyed some very tasty Tajima beef. They made simpler more kid-friendly dishes for our children. Breakfasts were also amazing, with fresh cooked-at-the-table tofu as well as the a variety of grilled fish, pickles, miso soup, and more.  The kids were unaccustomed to the Japanese breakfast but the adults were delighted. 

Now, about the service. Everyone was so helpful and friendly without being obtrusive.  Risa-san and I had been in email communication from the start and her English is excellent. She helped us to choose the right rooms and was also very flexible when we had to alter our dates. On our last day, the recent typhoon was beginning to affect rail travel and she personally called the train and bus stations to figure out what was going on.  We were due to check out and then take an express train to Osaka, but that got cancelled.  Risa-san not only helped us to figure out our options to get to Osaka, but she also accompanied us to the train station in the ryokan's private van to make sure we got on the right train and had the right schedule. She waited until we passed through the gates before she bowed and left. It was uncommonly kind of her and so very appreciated. For all her help, we gifted her with a small package of chocolates and she couldn't stop thanking us. I cannot say enough positive things about Risa-san and her staff. FYI, her husband owns the Mikiya and she helps him run it.  Her mother in-law actually lives at the ryokan and creates the flower arrangements.

Amazing ryokan with service that goes above and beyond

We have been to several onsen towns in Japan and Mikiya is one of the best onsen hotels we have stayed at. The service was very well-coordinated from the moment we stepped into the hotel ground (before we even reached the door) and all of the staff were always one step ahead of the guests. One of the managers spoke fluent English and very kindly led us through the whole yukata selection process and gave us detailed description of each course of the kaiseki dinner, which really added to our experience of the onsen culture. If you have the budget, Mikiya is a must-go for the full Japanese experience.

A must try experience

I will always remember Kinosaki because of Mikiya.  Our stay here was unforgettable ... beginning with the first greeting to our bilingual hostess, the kimono selection room, the Japanese garden and our spacious tatami room. There's more:  private dinner quarters and server, the wonderful kaiseki dinner (sweetest crab in the world), their onsen and all the extra touches.  One of the workers noticed my husband's guest slippers were too small so she immediately replaced them.  Truly a ryokan experience with  modern touches. The customer service that Japan is known for worldwide is executed here with perfection.  Splurge a little and enjoy!

Unforgettable

I loved my stay here. The manager speaks English which was incredibly helpful. He gave us great instructions on what to do and accommodated all dietary restrictions. The dinner was amazing. Everything was beautiful and tasted great. The room had floor to ceiling windows with sliding doors. It was a short walk to all the onsen. I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone that speaks English.
