Yufuin Souan Kosumosu

Ryokans and Kaiseki is my ultimate obsession. Cherishable memories created our loved ones through beautiful food accompanied exceptional customer service is why I continuously live to dream about it. Being a family of four, we always wanted to take advantage of larger sleeping accommodations, local dining options and multiple bath facilities that remote locations had to offer. Souan was definitely not our typical pick due to the location itself but my mom's vague recollection of her positive food experience with this place about 20 something years ago was a major indicator for us to do so. We were truly glad that we did. This tranquil sanctuary is conveniently located right in the hustle and bustle of Yufuin tourist attraction area, only steps away from popular souvenir shops. Don't let the humble exterior fool you. With the compassionate staff along with a mind-boggling kaiseki food experience, everything exceeded our expectations. The owner and Kie (our server) and the rest of the staff members made us feel completely at ease by consistently providing my family with exceptional customer service. The rooms were large and contemporary hinted with old world flairs. The onsen was a bit on the small side but the spring water literally made my hair silky smooth and skin feel like a baby's bottom. The dining experience was what literally flabbergasted us. The food looks so simple but we have never tasted anything like this before. From the creamiest tofu to the unique texture of the steak, every single ingredient caught us by surprise. It's typically nearly impossible to satisfy my crazy grandma due to her unattainable standards when it comes down to food but she gobbled everything down like there was no tomorrow. It's really difficult for me to express through my own words because all of these humble items look so familiar, but yet, tasted completely out of the ordinary. For those who are like us and looking for a completely unique dining and onsen experience, this is the go-to place. Thank you Soan Kosumosu Staff and Owner.
