Embedded into the village, this ryokan is tugged away into a quiet yet still close to restaurants, shops, and transportation. In walking distance to several local onsens where can mingle with the locals. An uphill walk of 10 minutes leads to the walkway that moves you up to the base of the ski area in another 5 minutes. The proprietors of the ryokan will do everything to make this your best stay. Rooms are comfortable but small. Japanese breakfast is offered in-house. Traditional dinner is available as well. Recommended!

Awesome stay at Nakajimaya Ryokan

My partner and I had a wonderful stay at Nakajimaya. The staff (especially Yukiko) went out of their way to ensure we had the best stay possible, including giving us a ride from and to the Chuo Bus Terminal (where we came in on the Nozawa Onsen Liner). We loved staying in the traditional Japanese room. The breakfast and dinners were absolutely delicious and a great experience all on their own. The in-house onsen was delightful and convenient— we ended up using it more than the others in town because of the convenience and privacy (though it's definitely worth it to check out the others around town). We can't wait to come back!

Pro tip: you have to reserve dinner at least 1.5 days prior, so be sure to do that if you're interested in enjoying dinner during your stay.

Fantastic ryokan experience

Great Ryokan experience in Nozawa Onsen. The staff was amazing and the room quite nice.

The location is a bit far from the Ski slopes but since February is a busy month with a lot of Australians visiting it was actually nice to be a bit far away from the action and closer to the local community. 

The futon provided with the room was thinner then other Ryokan's I stayed at. The room had additional futon beds in the closet so I stacked a couple futons on top of each other and slept comfortably. 

The Ryokan had a very nice onsen onsite and right across the street is a public onsen with two different temperature hot springs to enjoy.

There is a very nice traditional Japanese breakfast included with the room. 

I highly recommend Nakajimaya!

Wonderful Family owned Ryokan in Nozawa! Highly recommended!

As the word Ryokan implies, we stayed in a traditional Japanese inn with a spacious, clean room, with tatami mats to sleep on and an onsen for bathing. We were also provided with pyjamas (yukatas) which we could wear to breakfast and to the onsen. The traditional Japanese breakfast was something out of this world and a wonderful experience every morning. The husband and wife that owned/managed the inn were so friendly and helpful.

Wonderful cultural experience


- stay in late March/early Apr 2017 for skiing
- situated right opposite to the "hand of bear onsen", at the downhill slope at the Hikage side.
- On normal walking boots, takes about 5-10mins to walk uphill to the main streets, and then 5-10mins to Yu Road (covered auto walkway to the Hikage base of Nozawa Onsen ski resort)
- the japanese style room is quite large for a moderate price, with 8 pc tatami and a 1m  x 3m sitting area. My room has private bathroom, and it is inside the room but totally seperated from the sleeping area which is very well divided.
- down blanket is very warm, and pillow is not too hard comparing with some in other ryokans.  At least i dont need to use my own private one.
- Food is absolutely delicious. I tried both breakfast and dinner, many dishes are cooked local food such as eggplants, beans, mushrooms, the Nozawa spinach, eggs, etc.  I even asked to buy their home made black beans with soy, but they wont sell. 
- they have an small in house onsen, though most would go to the "hand of bear onsen" or two other public onsens which are along the road between main street and the ryokan. 
- i was first worried of needing to carry ski gears with ski boots on everyday, as its a 20mins slope.  Then the owner (Ms Yukiko) introduced me to keep everything at the shop, situated at Hikage Base, that is owned by another ryokan, with no fee required whilst tips are welcomed but not a must. So everyday I could reach the ski resort with hands free and normal shoes/boots on that make the short journey easy and lovely as some little warm up.
- Overall, its money for value.


Money for Value, very good food.

Nozawa Onsen is a lovely place to go skiing. Nakajimaya is well-located, but somewhat run down Japanese traditional ryokan.  The room was ordinary and the hot spring bath had no atmosphere. Breakfast comes with the room and it was Japanese style and reasonably good.  I was desperate for coffee, which was instant and not recommendable.  The staff were great, however.  They picked me up and dropped me off at the bus station and they were really nice and helpful.
