We caught the bus to the onsen in winter and came across such a beautiful winter landscape upon arrival. I would recommend the bus over train as it takes you directly there. I highly recommend venturing up on a day when it is snowing as it was an almost magical experience having the warm onsen with the cold snow wafting down from the mountain. The scenes around the onsen were also beautiful. The onsen itself was clean, private and well equipped with hair dryers, towel rentals and lockers. Would highly recommend going up if you have a few days in Kyoto !
