We spent two nights at Asumi Onsen. It is not easy to get there (no bus, far to walk from the train station), so we arranged that the owner picked us up with his car from Fuji Station. Tip: Go to the tourist office and ask them to call him. We didn't manage to make the coin phones at the station work...
The rooms are traditional ryokan with tatami mattresses and beddings that need to be taken out of the closet in the evening. There are two onsen-like bathrooms with big tubs that are free to use and very hot! 
We rented bikes to explore the area and went to the famous pagoda with view on Fujisan. It is best to go in the afternoon because there are fewer clouds around the summit. Also, we took the train to Fujikawaguchiko.
The breakfast was included but not traditional Japanese - we got toast and yogurt which was a bit disappointing because this was the only ryokan we booked on our trip and we had hoped for breakfast with rice.
The owners are very friendly and try to help wherever they can. They also offered to bring us to a restaurant when it was raining heavily one night.

these people were so lovely I cant even put it into words, very respectful peaceful place, we actually just walked from the station, stay in may, was lovely, the 2 Onsens are private so you dont have to get naked with strangers lol

The staff here are extremely nice and helpful. If you’re looking for a traditional Japanese room experience. This would be the place to come.

Amazing experience

We spent three nights at Asumi Onsen, having a great time.
The host picked us up at the train station even though we arrived late in the evening. He also drove us there when we had to leave and was very helpful in general. The hostess was also great although a little less versatile in English. 

The ryokan is in the outskirts of a village with a small hill, with a lovely cemetery, at the back which you can climb for nice views of Mt Fuji if the weather is as good as when we were there. 

We had a large traditional Japanese room. A breakfast with thé/coffee, toast and sometimes fruit and eggs is served in a dining room at a time of your choosing.

There are two onsen baths, normally gender separated but since we were the only guest we had one of them to ourselves. 

We borrowed bikes and one of the days had a great trip to Lake Kawaguchiko where we visited the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, showing amazing one of a kind kimonos in a very original building, truly recommendable. 

All in all a wonderful stay, we only wish we could have stayed longer. 

Welcoming ryokan with wonderful hosts

Excellent service provided by the host on daily basis; meals to onsen were all well taken care of. 
We asked for breakfasts and dinner to be catered during our stay. After our daily adventures; a newly filled onsen was there waiting for our indulgent to weather off the cold(winter).
For 1000yen per pax per dinner, we enjoyed the locally prepared dishes to a treat to sashimi. Money spend is totally worth.
To ease communicating regarding the meals, it would be if you can have it translated to some basic keys phase for that purposes.
During winter, guests can have a full view of Fuji san with 5 min walk from the location.

Wonderful

Get an authentic experience with a real hot spring Onsen, sliding door rooms, zabuton for relaxing in your room and futon for sleeping. The hosts are a charming and helpful couple who will give you advice about the town and even drove us back to the train station! They offer bikes to ride around the town as well, definitely worth a trip.
