Agree with the other reviewers that it's well equipped and in a great central location. Yes it's a bit worn down, though it didn't bother me since everything was still clean and functional. Though when I was searching, it was easily the cheapest decent place for a private room (shared bath) in central Beppu - don't know how the prices compare for a dorm room though. There is a communal full kitchen so you can also cook. Staff hours are a bit weird - I think it was 8 to 10 am and 5 to 10 pm, though there are free lockers with locks to use, rather than just leaving your things on the side somewhere.

good cheap stay for a private room

It is located less than a five-minute walk from Beppu Station and is conveniently located close to a Daiei supermarket, central Beppu entertainment, the bus routes, and auto rental agencies.  It has a large bed/sleeping area  such that even when every bed is taken in a dorm room, there is plenty of room for luggage and none need be left to block other people's access to their beds.  The rooms are clean. Restrooms are down the hall. Beppu Guest House is an old building that used to be a hospital.  The front door is at the street corner.  The staff was very nice and the kitchen was well equipped.  I reserved a one night stay, and liked it so much that I reserved two more nights the next morning.  Beppu has many competitively priced hostels and I haven't tried them all.  I wouldn't hesitate staying here again.  Visited 4-6 December 2018.

I love the Beppu Guest House because ...

There's nothing wrong with this hostel. Well organized, almost perfectly clean, well-equipped, nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, in the morning you have to share the toaster and the kettle with the staff.

Small rooms, common bathrooms but all clean

Very nice hostel, 2 mins from Beppu station and walking distance to several onsen. I think the building used to be a school, which makes sense given that it’s old, wooden, creaky and pastel-coloured inside. I found it really cute and charming!

The kitchen and common area are large, comfortable and clean with everything you need to cook for yourself, with free tea and coffee, plus bicycles to rent for only 200 yen(!) a day. There is a washing machine for 200 yen outside on the 4th floor, with free washing powder and plenty of space to hang and dry your laundry. The dorm was decent sized, with a comfortable bed, privacy curtains, power outlets and a personal light, plus each bed has a large storage shelf provided - more than large enough for a backpack.

The WiFi was erratic at times but fine. The staff are generally sweet and laid back - sometimes a little too laid back (it would’ve been nice if one or two had shown a basic smile or attempt to be helpful at times, but not a big deal). 

A couple of negatives - they advertise on hostelworld.com as only having 4 bed dorms and I was put in a 6 bed(?). They also only open Reception between 8-10am and 4pm-10pm, which was annoying when I turned up at 2.30pm and was told to go away and come back at opening times - 4pm is way too late for a hostel check-in in my opinion. They provide lockers to leave your luggage, but the check-in time should be made clear on booking websites, which it wasn’t. Also, there are only two toilets in the entire building for men to use, and two unisex showers (which are both on the ground floor). The place was mostly empty when I was there so it was no problem, but if the place was busier it could have been an issue.

Overall, very much recommended!

Cute, comfy hostel

Cheap, really near the train station, and contains the basic facilities for travellers with tight budget. The hostel is pretty spacious, and comfortable to walk around. The building is rather old, but well maintained.
Not bad actually.

Good enough for the price-concious traveller

This budget guest house is centrally located and easy to find. It is an old building but in good shape. Facilities are clean and well maintained. There is a women's shower and unisex ones but none exclusively for men - maybe you're expected to go to an onsen. The very traditional Takegawara Onsen with its hot sand bath is a short walk away.
Kitchen facilities are adequate for simple cooking and there is a smallish common area. The dormitory is ok, nothing special. Private rooms are available.

Budget bargain

Stayed here for 1 night in an all female dorm.

It's located on a small side street in Beppu but is within walking distance to Beppu Train Station (5 minutes). 

Pros:
-Close to transport, shops and restaurants
-Friendly staff. Very laid back
-Free luggage store prior to check in and after check out. There is a locker to store your bags

The hostel is old and a bit run down but offers free amenities and the bathrooms are clean. Good for travellers who are in Beppu for a quick stay and on a budget

Budget Accomodation

The hostel is not really big but offers a nice and clean place to stay. They offer to stay in a dorm or in smaller rooms. The commonplace is nice and offers a nice selection of mangas and other literature.The staff is kind and friendly.

Great place to sleep on budget in center of Beppu

Near the train station, a real youth hostel with a common part and a very affordable price especially for Japan, very close to the historic onsen of Beppu.
