After a 14 hour train ride in the sleeper class, my mother and i arrived looking perfectly dreadful and exhausted and cranky.  It was about 8AM, way earlier than any acceptable check in time for any hotel in the entire universe....but...they took one look at us - kindly - and offered us rest.  and breakfast (with freshly  brewed coffee, freshly fried hash browns, and delicious eggs) and then a gorgeous room - all before 9AM.  I know they were making an exception for us - because we were in bad shape - and I will be a loyal Elgin customer because of this.

we were booked into Gunter Grass's room - there are photos of him in Calcutta all over the room and it was such a delight to stay in there.  I've stayed in fancy schmancy modern and sleek hotels, but this hotel - gave me love chills of staying in a historic, beautiful hotel - like Del Mar in San Diego, Mohonk in New York.  There is history to the place, elegance that is deeply rooted, and hospitality that is genuine.  And Gunter Grass!  My favorite author growing up (don't ask me why).  Everything is slightly rundown - but shabby chic.  Not like mold in the shower curtains, or dust on the bedframe.  NO.  the housekeeping service was immaculate, the towels fluffy, and robes and slippers ready.  

The dining service staff were dear and attentive and kind and sweet. and food is good.  We had a fish curry here - that I am still thinking about.  And their strawberry milkshake reminded me of the ones I used to drink when I was a child.  
...Unfortunately, we only booked one night here - but we left the place feeling extremely refreshed and ready to take on Calcutta....it would not be that - but that's for another review.  

the city is truly walkable here - for first time explorer of Calcutta, Elgin is THE place to be - Indian museum is down the block, major shopping market is few blocks away, park street is but a 5 minute tuktuk ride away...it is a central location that I regret not looking into more seriously:  We tried other neighborhoods (air bnb near victoria memorial - nothing really interesting in walking distance except for malls - who cares about malls?, Lalit Kolkata - DON'T (chaotic neighborhood, interesting walk to the water/courthouses BUT Lalit Kolkata is managed poorly and you'll be upset leaving it. 
 also, kind of disturbing to have the hotel next to kind of a grubby block where men sort of look at you in a way that makes you feel uneasy), calcutta bungalow - cool, but really out of the way of the hustle and bustle, one must schlep staying in this boutique hotel...).  

In Calcutta, Elgin wins HANDS DOWN in terms of value, location, hospitality, exquisite elegance.  One of the  places I will miss about India is - Elgin Fairlawn.

I am always very happy to come to the Elgin hotel! The service is nice and fast, they help you with everything. The reception employees always have good recommendations, what to see and visit.  It’s a very nice and cozy hotel with great food. Would recommend 100%!

V old style hotel from colonial era - huge rooms with vintage furniture. Hotel is in an excellent location, with very friendly and helpful staff, free wifi that worked well, and an excellent breakfast.

Hugely enjoyable stay here. Stunning heritage style rooms and public areas, very friendly helpful staff and the most delicious breakfasts we had on our whole trip. Lunches great too, as was tea in the lounge. Just a perfect stay, would definitely recommend

The Elgin Fairlawn is an absolute gem and an oasis in the bustling city of Kolkata.
A beautiful colony building full of old-world charm and atmosphere.
We started our holiday in Kolkata at the Elgin Fairlawn and had such a good experience we booked again to finish there as well.

Celebrated my wife’s birthday here. The hotel staff have been most helpful. Everyone from the Marketing team (Ms Subrata Nandy) to the hotel staff (Riya and team) helped plan and execute the perfect surprise birthday. 
The food is great, and one must try at least a few of the fish/prawn recipes they serve. The in-house chef takes requests seriously and accommodates special recipes should you feel the need for it. 
Also the property is pet friendly at no extra cost.

Heritage hotel in excellent location with wonderful staff

Four nights in this historic hotel were a pleasure.  We even got to watch the setup for filming a Bollywood movie in the hotel.  Yes, it's old and under refurbishment.  But it's a real deal in the meantime.  

A/C works; geyser can be cranky; staff is wonderful; bookshelves full of interesting reads; elegant lounges and balconies; rooms at the back are quiet;  beds comfortable; linens clean;  food excellent and safe for western tummies.  Highly recommend.

Beautiful Interesting place

The Elgin Fairlawn has def had a facelift. A lovely ambiance. Many attentive and helpful staff, starting with Debasish at the reception, Rinky, Prakash and Paele and Anand on service . Service of rooms too was good. 
What def needs improvement is letting guests know what is available to order at Breakfast and for the buffet to be served hot. 
Re: Disappointed with room 14 downstairs which was very bare, no window, no pics, including only a sink, no vanity in the bathroom and nowhere to put your toiletries. I'm sure this could be addressed in keeping with the heritage style of the hotel. Would have been a 5 star rating if room was better appointed.  Excellent location. 
Should be a 3.5 star based on the room.
