If you want to experience lige in a very small “bygd” you should visit Oqaatsut! We hiked from Ilulissat to Oqaatsut and had a wonderful stay at Hotel Nordlys. The rooms were very nice and clean, and we could see the icebergs from the windows. The breakfast was good with homemade bread, and sitting on the terrasse to enjoy the views of the sea and the calm atmosphere was wonderful. We had a delicious dinner at Restaurant H8, did a whale watching tour with Ole, we also used his boat shuttle back to Ilulissat by boat. We highly recommend Hotel Nordlys!

I stayed 2 nights here in early May, while winter still had a strong grip on the east Greenland coast. It is owned and operated by generous host Ole, who will pick you up from Ilulissat fisherman's harbour (beside the Royal Greenland factory), convey you by scenic boat trip to Rode Bay and also cook meals for you if booked at reservation. The hotel is very simple, rooms are spacious and comfortable - this is all about the ultra authentic Greenland experience living in a tiny village. The best things about Hotel Nordlys are - no electronic/internet distractions, being in the great wide Greenlandic outdoors and feeling the flow of village life for a couple of days. There is a restaurant in the village during summer, and you can go dogsledding in winter. At all times of year, icebergs will go quietly drifting by the bay while you read your books in the conservatory with floor-to-ceiling windows. In darker months, you should be able to see Aurora Borealis dance above the hills from the same conservatory. I had a very peace time being away from all distractions, with plenty of space to walk and enjoy the outdoors. I would recommend for couples, friends and solo adventurers. Families - there are working dogs in the village, so be sure that you and the kids are fully on point about correct Greenland dog etiquette.

I stayed 3 nights at the Nordlys Hotel, a small, clean and tidy place. The owner, Ole, is a very kind, hard working man, if you phone him and make a reservation, he will pick you up at the pier in Ilulissat and take you in Rodebay with his boat, it's a short, nice trip!
The rooms are spacious, the toilet and shower is not private, but Ole makes sure that it's always very clean. He made dinner for me and other guests the first 2 nights, he is also a good chef! In the village there is a restaurant and a small supermarket. You can go trekking, or ask for an escursion at the hotel, or just take a book and relax, listening to the silence!

I’ve been there 2 nights in March 2019 for my honeymoon. Ole, the owner, is absolutely perfect. Born in the area, spent his life there. The hotel has the most incredible view I’ve ever seen (so the room have). It’s a 30min ride by boat to get there (it’s just a sightseeing ride imho). 
The village is rather small, but we were traveling in Greenland to find this type of place. 
The hotel is great, nice place with a fireplace, the best view possible. 
Olé had been abs Lovely with us. Dinner and lunch were great. He also found us a muncher for the dogsledding (and was opened to find us anything we need).
Shared shower with hot water! Clean.
Basic restroom (yes it’s quite the edge of the world so sometimes it can’t be anything else than basic) but the owner is always around to make sure it’s clean. 
Just go, you won’t regret it. If you come in the north part of Greenland you are for sure looking for a place like that

With the help from the friendly young lady working in a souvenir shop in Ilulissat airport, we got on a pre-booked taxi to the pier in August last year.

The hotel owner Ole sailed his small motor boat to send us to his hotel from  Ilulissat to Oqaatsut.

Unfortunately, the weather was not nice to us.  It was raining and the boat was moving unsteadily along the ices and icebergs in the rough sea.  My travel partner was terrified than me as there was no proper railing for us to hold and the boat was pretty bumpy for the whole 30-minute journey.  We had already determined to change to hotel for our next day in Greenland. 
 
Nordlys is located in a remote village.  There are a lot of sled dogs around.  It looked gloomy in the rainy day and the icebergs around also looked dull in the sea.  However, we were delighted to see a beautiful rainbow from our window.  

There are a lot of kitchen utensils for use.  I did make dinner there given that there is little restaurant choice in Ilulissat.

I was thankful that my friend and I only needed to stay in Nordlys for one night as there was no flush in the toilet which I guess all houses in Oqaatsut are like that.  I would never forget the barking of sled dogs at night before I fell into sleep.  Nordlys is the most unforgettable hotel I have ever stayed.
 
I would like to sincerely thank you Mikael  – the Danish summer intern who helped to carry our luggage and prepare breakfast, etc.  Also a big THANK to Ole who steered us safely all the way and brought us to see the spectacular floating icebergs in the sea.

I stayed here as part of a group in February and because the sea was frozen we flew in by helicopter, a magical experience. This is a small settlement with colourful houses and a population of about 40 people, though some do not stay there in the Winter.  The hotel was warm and comfortable with huge windows in the dining area which allowed the sun to shine in and gave us all a great view. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but being winter the shower did not work though there was running water in the bathroom and hot and cold in the kitchen. The WC is very basic and non flushing, but then you are remote.The accommodation is kept very clean by the owner, who is a very helpful gentleman. Much to my surprise there is street lighting when it is dark. It is a short walk to the sea where you can see icebergs.  We were lucky to get clear skies and the aurora, which was particularly good with red, green and purple showing to the naked eye and not just picked up by the camera. There is no internet as expected.  I enjoyed it so much I am returning in September this year.

Be ready and prepared to live a different kind of adventure when you get here... And to get here in summer... You have two choices... Either hike for seven hours "piece of cake" or wait for ole to pick you up at the harbour... He is such a wonderful person... With his orange boat... You take a taxi from illulissat airport to the harbour where he will pick you up... The journey will take half an hour... But its a journey you will never forget... You will be surronded by wonderful iceburgs... Once you get there... The rooms are clean and the towels are washed always... But the bathroom was a weird experience... Ren the yellow bags when you get to the shore... No Internet inside the hotel... Its only available in a restaurant near by and ofcoarse you have to pay... The town has fifty people and 200 Dogs... 😁

Now thats a greenland experience 

The worst situation I have been in Greenland. So I will explain everything is not explained on booking when you book there and I think that some uncommon things should be explained before to potential guests and let them the choise to come or not.
Be prepared to walk with your baggage on the rocks up to the structure, there are no roads there or easy walk if it is loud and mine was as I was traveling more than a month but would help if the owner advice before so I could have left a bag in Ilulissat. 
Worst thing is about sanitary, nowhere mentioned that in the structure there is only one chemical wc for everybody (owner comprised) and one shower of which the water is limited as the village does not have illimited water. 
I can honestly say that I don't use chemical wc in normal situations and I rather prefer to pee in a wood! That one was really dirty, the toilet cover was yellow on his inside and it disgusted me only touch it! So it was really uncomfortable. 
The kitchen was dirty and I prefered to go to the restaurant in the area. 
Also no advice that the only one market there closes at 3pm (hour of my arrive) and I had nothing with me. 
The boat ride is managed from the owner of the "hotel", also the price is not reported nowhere and when you ask about time table he does not say nothing about the cost. 800 ddk or 107 euro to reach a village 30 min from Ilulissat each way, absurd! 
And please, don't think it is so remote place as to reach the really remote Queqertarssuaq on Disko island it needs 2 hours and 100km and at cheaper boat cost! 
Any sensibility from the owner that has come at the hotel with a bloody bone of seal in his hand to making a soup,but also not careing about thousands of mosquitos entering in the structure becouse he did not be biten and we all were like a dinner for them! 
Seeing al this in a couple of hours I decided to delete istantanely my reservation if two days on booking paying the penalty of the first night I stayed in, so he decided to make me pay a provision of 319 ddk or 43 euro saying that is the provision he has to give to booking, but when I've back at home booking fortunately denied everything and now they will work to give me the money back. 
I haven't found the owner honest and not human, only interested in earning money calling a dirty hostel "hotel". 
The day of departure until the end he  haven't told me an exact time as I had a free pick up of other REAL HOTEL in Ilulissat and I had to comunicate the time I could be at the port, so it was another problem being without internet. He would like me waiting with bagagges ready the other group of guests went with kayak for almost other two hours and more just to take all with one ride but  as I payed 107 euro I insisted to go and I obtained it. 
Just few words about the breakfast, some defrozen bread and carbonized bread toast, some slice of ham and the jam wasn't in its jar but he served just 3 or 4 spoons a time in a small cup. 
When I have left my room he just changed the bed linen and it was ready for another guest that promptly entered. This is how it has been cleaned with covid still going around.. 
But the worst is that while I was having the breakfast, before check out time he entered in my room, remove all my personal  things from the bed and took away tge the bed linens. I've never seen something like this in years traveling. 
Trully worst host ever! And I suggest to change the name, this place is not an hotel category! As it doesn't need just a window with a beautiful view on the bay to be  called hotel... If you are clean people you won't like it so I don't recommend
